Powder selection reloading 7mm Rem Mag for a BAR?
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:29:16 AM »
I have a 7mm Rem Mag BAR I'd given to a younger hunter and it  has reverted to my keeping.  It's in good shape and hasn't been fired a lot as far as I know.  Truth be told, it's been in the safe a good while.  I've never fired it and, though I reload for most all my firearms, I have not done so for this rifle and/or caliber.

I have a large selection of old and new loading manuals and have loaded a good bit for the .270 Weatherby Mag so I do have some idea of what powders might be useful but..........
here's what I've been pondering upon.   When loading the .30-06 for my Garand, I've learned (from experienced shooters and the literature) that the slower (and often more ballistically optimal) powders are not desirable for use with the gas piston operated semiautomatic action due to a timing confilct between maximum chamber pressure, free gas piston operation, and empty case ejection.

So my question here is whether or not this type of conflict might be a consideration when choosing a powder for reloading the 7mm Rem Mag for the BAR or has that conflict been somehow engineered out of the equation in the more modern design?

Thank you for your time, thoughts, shared experience, ideas, and  taking time to read this somewhat awkward post.
Best Regards,

I load RL-22 in my buddy's BAR 7mm Mag and havent had any problems with it. Shouldnt be a problem unless you drop way down, but most of the powders for a 270 Weatherby will work for a 7 Mag.
