brass length
« on: January 20, 2008, 03:50:59 AM »
All my manuals and the Internet tell me my brass for the 44 rem mag is to be 1.285 the longest new bras I have is 1.280 which i have loaded and seems to be fine. However i have some once fired factory loaded bras that i would like to use and most is around 1 .270. i want to load this with mag primers, 24 grains h110, and the hornady  240 gr. hp/xtp. this is the load i used in the 1.280 long brass. if I load the 1.270 long brass should i reduce the 24 gr of h110 ( 24 grains is the max load) to 23.5 grains. I am new to this reloading game and appreciate all the help I get from this site.

you should NEVER start with a maximum load. you need to start lower and work your way up. according to hornady seventh edition reloading manual 24.8 grains is the max load. i would start at 23.5 and work my way up slowly loking for pressure signs. the lighter loads may surprise you, they just may be more accurate thean the heavy ones.

The .015 should not make that much of a difference as the loads worked ok before , BUT back off .5 grains and work back up just to be on the safe side as your very close to max .

Once the brass has been loaded and fired a few times it will get closer to spec length . the only thing will be your crimp may be off a tad .

so should i seat the bullet to the crimp line or should a not worry about that and seat the bullet to specs 1.610. if i seat to the crimp line they will be short. these rounds are shot out of a revolver.

Hoggunner that 1.285" is the MAX case length to be used.  Anything longer than that may cause problems.  It is not at all unusual to trim .015' off even though .010" is what is usually suggested, therefore the 1.270 brass will work just fine and won't have to be trimmed quite as soon.  The Max OAL listed in the manuals is like many other things in handloading, a guideline.  If you can crimp in the cannelure and the round chambers correctly then by all means do so.  If not you may have to adjust as necessary.

As suggested above you may want to reduce your load and work up if you are making any drastic changes.  An overall length adjustment of .010" isn't going to make a noticeable difference provided that is the ONLY change you've made.

Are you measuring the brass before or after full length resizing?

these are straight walled 44 cases and are measured after sizing.
