What would you do??
« on: January 23, 2008, 04:19:14 PM »
Well, I have this Colt Delta in 10mm. Had it a lot of years now, sold it once and bought it back a few years later. Gotten to where I like the gun a bit. Mostly, I keep it for the Wild Bunch shoots in Cowboy Action Shooting. Don't cary it much for a CCW, have other guns that I like better for that.

Thing is, I find myself with enough extra money to put real Ivory grips on it, and I just LOVE real Ivory's. Think I ought to put the Ivory's on it?? Or save the money and put them on one of the  multitude of other guns I have??

I've got my mind made up, but thought I'd ask the rest of you before I ordered them. LOL!!!!!

Is Ivory strong and resilient enough to withstand the shock of the 10mm?  I don't know if it is Ivory or pearl that won't take the shock of a heavy revolver or semi.

I do feel they would dress up the gun though.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

It's mother of pearl that is fragile.  Don't know if I would put ivory on a hard kicking single action but on a 1911, the force of recoil is transmitted to the hand via the main spring housing and grip safety rather than the rear edge of the grips.  If you would like to dress it up, go ahead.  It will add to your enjoyment.  I have an engraved Colt that I would like to do that to at some point but I don't have the extra to do it now.  And I don't want to spend the price of the 'tru Ivory' when that money could go a long way towards 'real' Ivory.  Enjoy that gun.  44 Man

This is what I'm looking at:

GP03 COLT, SPRINGFIELD OR KIMBER FULL SIZE .45 AUTO IVORY GRIPS
These will fit any of the 1911 or 1911-A1 frame auto pistols and are approximately 4 inches tall. No fitting required, just take off your old grips and put ours on!
"A" GRADE- very little grain (great for scrimshawing)-$175
"AA" GRADE- fine ivory with grain on at least one side-$195
"AAA" GRADE- fine ivory, beautiful grain, both sides-$250

I'm thinking probably the AAA grade would look the best, as I don't want any scrimshawing at all.  These can be seen at Boone Trading Co. site.

They have a decent selection of Ivory grips to pick from.  And if I ever sell the gun, I can always keep the grips and reuse them on another, or sell them separately.

That make sense to the rest of you??

Looks very nice, but I think you should get the NARWHAL Ivory grips.

ivory does fine on 1911s. Only problme ive seen with it on 1911s is warping and shrinkage after a while if the material isnt stable to begin with. But that can happen on any gun. Ivory will take more abuse then people give it credit for. After all elephants use it for fighting and rooting in the dirt  all the time. Another option that can be slightly cheaper is giraffe bone. Its slightly harder and can be about identical  in look to ivory and is cheaper.

Thanks, Lloyd, I'll look into the giraffe bone grips and see what I find.

Always interested in spending less money. LOL!!!!

Not only no, but H*** NO!  Just give it to me!  Thats what I think you really outa do.  Well, there I've said my peace.  I think if it would make you happy to have a set of ivories on it, go fer it.  I probably won't have to look at it and hide larceny in my heart.  So yeah, I guess its all right with me if you put ivory grips on my huh I mean your gun.

Luckyducker - Yo Siento Dude, I get it first.  Ya'll are just gonna hafta hide the larceny in your heart and suffer.  I'll even sendya a tissue.  Shame on ya fer tryin' to slide that one in (an ya didn't even ask him fer all his ammo either).....

Greenriver - slide a set of ivories on that 10mm baby and since you take it with you to those Wild Bunch shoots get yourself a set of matching cufflinks to go with those grips and make it a gentleman's affair.  Ya'll can probably outshoot the rest of them anyhow, so ya might as well dress it up.  Just a thought.  Mikey.
