Any experience with 40gr Vmax molly in 223 with 1-9 twist
« on: January 16, 2008, 06:07:38 AM »
It looks like I have acquired a 223 barrel that I am going to adapt to one of my frames. I was wanting to try the Hornady 40 gr V-Max Molly bullet. Does anyone have any info on this bullet in a 1-9 twist barrel? Any info or recommendations on bullet/powder combos for this round? Thanks in advance - F50 aka Gary

I have heard that the 40 gr bullets in the faster twist aren't very accurate. Also I have never been a fan of moly, I just don't see the evidence for it.

Given the twist rate, you'd probably be much happier with something closer to 55gr.

i have a 1:9 .223 standard barrel. i have had some luck with the non-moly 40's and H322. groups in the 3/4 inch range. the 55's group about the same with H335.

Traditionally, the 1:9" barrels shoot the same 40gr-55gr bullets just as well as the 1:12" barrels, some have attained decent accuracy in the 1:9" barrels with bullets in the  69gr-75gr range, but they may have been Marlin made barrels since those reports were made in 2007, previously the 1:9" barrels had a terrible reputation with anything heavier than 55gr-60gr.

The Hornady 55gr V-Max Moly works well in my Handi Rifle. I've used this round on foxes, coyotes, bobcats, Whitetail, and even Axis. Its accurate enough for neck shots on axis out to 100 yards. That's about the maximum distance where I hunt. It works very well in my Handi Rifle.
