Cart before the Horse.
« on: February 18, 2008, 07:13:11 AM »
I just ordered a scope from Midsouth for the new rifle I haven't bought yet.
It's a Simmons Master Series Prohunter 6x40.

I thought about giving the Meade stuff a try but then changed my mind this morning.  I ordered a Mueller Apv.   I saw a Weaver v-9 on sale for $109 and it was tempting.  I think the Weaver stuff is made in Japan now, don't know about the Simmons.  I read where most of them are made in the Philippines or China but can't say for sure.  The thing that killed the deal with the Weaver was the bad reports on their customer service.  There were quite a few since Meade has taken over.  The simmons customer service use to be great when Blount had the company.  It was too much of a gamble for me.  I knew what to expect with the Mueller, I just had too many doubts on the Meade stuff.

This one was $86 with freight.
At this price range you just take your chances.
My $29 3-9x40 Simmons that has worked just fine for me.
I have wanted a 6 power scope for a while.

It seems that many believe that you have to hang a $500 scope on a rifle to harvest any game.  I used an old Bushnell Sportview for years without a problem.  The ones that shout for the $500 scopes have credit cards maxed to the gills. Be satisfied you don't have to do that.  Hunt as cheap as possible with equipment that works! You're doing it already.  Good luck and keep us informed when you get it mounted!

It's on the UPS truck for delivery!

Now I get to go find some good sturdy rings.

I have a couple made in Japan Weaver scopes.  I have to admit they have been good.  I had one on the rifle I took a buck with in the 2007 season.  It did not fog up in the the transition of two hours in the warm pickup to and a couple of hours in sub freezing temperature's to take a buck.  I have a same generation Simmons scope on another rifle.  It has held up but I do not think the optics are as clear.  But it has been an okay scope, it has a buck to it's credit and a couple hundred rounds from a .270 have been fired under it.

I got it yesterday evening!
There is a huge difference between a $30 Simmons and a $100 Simmons.

It is much clearer than my other scopes.

The turrets will take some getting used to though.
Not exactly "audible" like the ad said.
They are very easy to grip and turn though.

I like to keep an extra scope that is not mounted.  That means I'm at least one rifle short of my needs.
