Handi Project

Ok, I have a spare SB2 receiver (DOB 1996) my buddy gave me last year and I want to do something with it. I've been thinking of using a GM barrel and using a donor under lug for the project. I've read somewhere that GM barrels were used in the past on Handi rifles. How were they as far as accuracy? I'm thinking of something like a 25 Bullberry(30/30 necked down to 25cal), 357 herrett or 327mag. or something along those lines. The GM barrels run about $85 so if the project is a failure I won't be out too many greenbacks. What are your thoughts? Here is the link to GM barrels.

. Any info. or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Later.

Joel45acp, with a fine name like that you might be interested in what I am having made up right now, something I have wanted for a long time. I waited until I got my .35 Remington barrel for my Handi and then was the recipient of a 30-40 Krag barrel, I then finally was able to get started on another long wanted Handi Barrel, a .45 ACP!!!. I should have it in a couple of months at the latest, perhaps
sooner.. I cannot wait, it is going to be a "fun gun" for sure. I will go along well with my 1911....<><....

Joel45ACP,
Sounds like an interesting project. Keep us all informed as to how it goes. Some of the calibers sound interesting to me for sure. I like the sound of the 25 Bullberry.
MSP Ret,
Your .45 ACP really sounds interesting. A rifle with that caliber in combination with my Sig P220 would make a super woods/camping combination. Only have to carry one box of ammo in addition to that carried in the Sig. I am interested in that project also.

I'm just going to watch for now but a .35 Rem is my next barrel, and I noticed it jumping up and down saying "pick me...pick me"..Handi's are just too cool that way....
GM barrels are pretty accurate too ..aren't they?

One method for using a barrel blank is to have a gunsmith weld a donor underlug to the blank, cut the extractor notch and then chamber it as I'm having done with a 28" 6.5mm Shilen match blank for a 6.5x55 Ultra by Wayne York, same smith that did mine and MSP's 35 Rem rechambers.
35 Remington is an easy rechamber of a 357mag barrel, an extractor barrel is even easier as it would just involve swapping a 30-06 extractor for a 357 extractor. Ejectors barrels are a littel more complicated, see the FAQs for that.

After checking the twist of the two...GM vs Handi....looks like the Handi .357 wins with the quicker 1 in 18 3/4" twist...the GM @1 in 20" might be too slow with 200gr....I'm already rethinking ...........

1:20" is probably Ok for 200gr, my 35 Rem will shoot 240gr and 250gr RN or FN just fine, spitzers would be a different matter tho, but I doubt there are any spitzers that heavy that would have good terminal performace at 35 Rem velocities, they're made for hotter chamberings like 358 Win and 35 Whelen.

Tim...I'm assuming your .35 Rem is a rechambered Handi .357....how does it like 150 gr....I'll be sticking with round nose pills....thats what makes 'em thump isn't it? I'm also sold on the 200gr from reading. As usual, I'm looking for ONE load to fit the bill for 2 or more barrels/guns. 240 and 250 gr RN/FN...who makes 'em? I'm in no hurry...as long as it happens tomorrow.

Yes, both mine and MSP's are rechambered 357Mags, although mine was Maxied by Big Bore Fan before I bought it from him, the lightest I've shot is 200gr cast bullets, I have some 180gr SSPs to shoot, but haven't yet.
