New rossi chambered in 7.62x39
« on: October 12, 2007, 04:15:12 PM »
Hello im waiting on a new arrival for my boy its a 7.62x39 rossi , i was wondering anyone shot one ?
how do you like it ? what kind of groups are you shooting , and also what bore diaminter is it ?
I am going to pick up some factory rems to break it in as soon as it arrives just wondering how it is and should i order some dies for it. I liked it for the very low recoil of the 7.62 , i have owned a few sks's and just wondering if there was a differance in felt recoil between the 2 , my boy shoots my 221 fireball alot and was wanting to take a deer this year with it and i got him this since recoil and a bigger cal even though he shoots my fireball pretty good.
thanks
chris

>>>UPDATE<<<<

Ok well i finally received my boys rossi 7.62x39 and it was given to him as a early birthday present , well we strapped on a bushnell 3x9x40 and i bought some dies and started by shooting a box of Winchester fmj through it to start breaking it in. Well breaking the barrel in with the fmj and the rifle was holding at a 1 1/2" groups at 100yds  pretty nice just fire forming the brass . broke the rifle in with about 40 rounds like i do my bench rest rifles , and loaded up some 125grn nosler ballistic tips and the ballistic has a long throat for the 125's at least (i can touch lands with 150's) loading with H-322 25 grns and i shot the other day shooting 5 shot groups with a agg of 7/8 ". Loaded up again pushing the bullet as far as i could go safely and shot 4 5 shot strings and the worst was just under .873 " the best was .527" now i know some wont believe but this rossi is a house of fire , i was really wondering if getting it was a good idea but its a sweet little rifle .
So make sure to break it in right , it took 40 rounds to get it smooth it was rough inside sweets 7.62 and JB bore paste and scrub scrub scrub , but it was worth the dying elbow to do it .
if anyone has one the bore diameter of this one is a .308 so if you need some measurement of what i have let me know i will pass them on

Not from personal experiance but from what I gather from this and other forums the action has no problem handling additional pressures of squeezing a .311 bullet down a .308 bore, but the problem with surplus military ammo are the heavier metal used in the primers which the hammer of the Rossi as well as the NEFs have difficulty igniting so misfires occur on a regular basis.  I have read but can't verify that this chambering has been dropped from both makers due to this reason.

Ok i used the fmj wins to fireform for my boys rifle i did have 2 rounds that i had to rotate the case and then refire to get it to go off , but i shot 40 rounds of the win stuff to break the barrel in and only 2 didnt go off on the 1st try . I just shot this rifle again the other day and i shot still under 1" moa at 100 yds
im really please with this rifle and now the seasons over we will be getting it alittle nicer looking by redoing the stock, im going to try the rem brass also since the win brass is small rifle primer and rem is large wanna see if there is any difference in the way she shoots . but backed with h-322 25.0grns shes a sweet set-up .
also i wanna load up some 150grns in it to ill keep everyone posted on how that turns out

I picked up one right before Christmas. I mounted a Burris Fullfield II 3X9X40 IN Leupy rings.

So far all I've shot are the Rem 125gr PSP and Win white box loads.
Both shoot right around an inch at 100, if the rifle is rested properly. Off a rest or bags it would open up the groups. If I put my left hand on the forearm in the normal shooting position and rest my hand on the bag, it shoots great groups.

From what I seen with the Handi rifles this means I need to bed the forearm.

Btw, the trigger on this one was great right out of the box.

I also have one, sounds like you guys are having good luck with yours.
I can only hope that when I get some time that mine will shoot as well as yours.
I need to get some brass or loaded shells, I got some shells with it but they are
bear brand 123 hp and i think they sell for 4.00 per20 so I don't look for good
results from these. but maybe they will work good ,we will see.

I shoot 150 gr cast bullets out of mine and it's a tack driver at 50 yds with one hole groups. As far as the misfires, I do not think it's as much of an issue of the primers, as it is an issue of an excess of head space.

I have found that all of the reloads with Lapua brass go off every-time.  I have also shot some Wolf elcheapo rounds and most of them go bang on the first try, with pretty good results

I definitely think this ones a keeper.

duckdog, thanks for the info on this.  i'm interested in purchasing one of these but only if it will shoot wolf ammo i use in my ak.  otherwise, i'll just get .308 or .223.  the local gander mountain has these for about $150 and it's tempting if i can use the surplus ammo.
