308 deer loads for 15 inch encore
« on: October 17, 2007, 04:25:19 PM »
I am new to 308 encore in 15 in. pistol lenth.. please suggest a bullet weight and type;
the speed I would need to push it to for expansion on deer sized game at up to 200 yards;
the trype of trajectory I can expect at 150 and 200  yards;
I have read that I need to exceed 2100 fps for expansion with 150gr.
and that it is possible to push lighter bullets too fast for reliable penetration

I would recommend a 165 or 168 grain bullet and what ever turns out to be most accurate for you.  This could be a Berger VLD, a Barnes TSX and many others.

Push it as fast as you can while maintaining good accuracy and acceptable pressure and it will be fast enough for expansion.

Sighted in about 2 inches high at 100 yards, it will probably be right on at around 200 yards.  You really should try it at 100 and at 200 yards to know for sure.

That would depend on the construction of the particular bullet you were using.  In any case, you should be able to easily exceed 2,100 fps.

If you are shooting 165 or 168 grain bullets made of lead and/or copper from a 15 inch handgun barrel loaded to acceptable pressure, you will not be able to push the bullets too fast for reliable penetration.

I just got a 15" 308 barrel and the first load I tried will probably be my last. 150gr Nosler Accubond, Varget powder. 1/2 to 1" groups @ 100. I haven't checked the speed yet but according to the hodgon website it should be around 2400/2500 fps.

DK  ,  We've talked before about this, my 308 load is 150 Sierra spitzer, pushed by IMR 4895 , don't know the specifics on the FPS, but it performs well on whitetail.  Just today at the range son #1 was shooting his again ( he likes showing dad up ) he's shooting about dead on at 25...inch high at 100 and an 1nch low at 150........rang the 6 X 12 gong at 200, twice from the bags.  I use 4895 and that bullet, cause I also use that bullet and powder in some of my other loads.....keeps the bench and shelves less cluttered.  If your interested in that combination  give me a PM and I'll get back to you,  I don't like to give out load specifics over the net.   Good luck with your 08, your gonna love it !   Mike

The only deer I shot with factory winchester psp loads was at about 30 yards.  Performance was all I could have hoped for.  I don't know how they would perform at 200 yards, but up close they were impressive to say the least.

at seventy five yards the PSP winchester performed a grisly feat with a large exit wound and great internal injury including cutting the veins to the heart completely.. and disembowled two back to back bob cats that trotted by... sort of strung them out so to speak.. I was a little slow to scope and fire and hit center mass...
I am satisfied for now... more to report on more shooting...
