depends on a million things.
What is your range for an effective shot?
can you withstand recoil?
What type of action do you want? bolt, single, semi, lever, pump?
is this going to be used only for deer hunting? do you have bear in mind?
Give us a little more, adn we can help you out.
Cheers,

Like Michigan, probably the 7m-08 , 308 or 30-06.  But really the best is the one that you like the most.

Hi there.  If you are hunting in PA  hardwood a 7-30 waters, 30-30, 35 Rem. In open country a 308, 270, 30-06. That is my 2 cents.

If you don't need to reach out past 250 yards, pick a 260 Rem, a 7-08 Rem, or a 308 Win.  If you shoot only factory ammo, don't pick the 260.  If you also hunt black bears, pick the 308, and load it with a good 165 gr. bullet.

In reply to your actual question, the best rifle for Pennsylvania would probably be a Remington 7600 pump or a BLR lever.

As to cartridge, any "middle" cartridge would do.  I'd probably go with a .308, but there are many excellent choices out there.  I hunt with a .358 in Ontario.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

Worked in a sporting goods store for years in PA.  Hands down our number one seller was the remington 760/7600 in 30-06.  Our next best seller was the same gun in any of the other calibers available from the factory or special runs of odd calibers.  After that was the Marlin 336/30AS in 30-30.  Never had any complaints or returns for any rerason on either of these.

I hunt in the Moshannon State Forest above I-80 between DuBois and Clearfield, PA. with a Model 99 Savage in .300 Savage, the "father" of the .308 Winchester.

The .270 Winchester is a fine rifle for any medium game alive... as is the .308 Winchester.  Neither caliber is hard on the shoulder, but the .308 has a greater range of bullet weights.  However, the .270 Winchester using a 130 grain soft point or the .308 Winchester using a 150 grain softpoint bullet will do an excellent job on any whitetail that ever lived out to 250 yards... or more if you're a good enough marksman to take longer shots.

But even a .30/30 Winchester will do the trick inside 150 yards.  Whitetails aren't hard to kill if the hunter puts his bullet where it belongs... it the deer's "boiler room".

I find myself  reaching in the gun cabinet and taking my 270 Win. for whitetails. The 130gr. bullet is instant death on deer.

Deer rifle questions?

Greetings.   Well, here's two cents worth of info.......#1, the rifle must fit and appeal to you.  If you buy what everyone else has and it doesn't feel right, then you won't shoot it as well.  #2, you must "love" your rifle...without getting ridiculous here, you simply must want to pull it out of the cabinet or safe and hit the woods with it.  Be it a bolt, lever, semi, or pump, you simply must have a fit and feel for your rifle and think of it as an extension of your own arms.   Then, more often than not, you'll shoot that particular rifle quite well.  There are many features to look at when shopping for a particular rifle but I personally believe most folks get caught up on what they've read or what they've been told, instead of their own opinions.   While there are gems and lemons with every maker, Remingotn, Ruger, Winchester, Savage, Weatherby, Sako, Browning, Tikka, and  Marlin all make fine firearms for the deer hunter.  Caliber is a different story.  If you are a handloader, then the choice is of little importance as you will fabricate your loads to your rifle.  If not, then choosing a popular caliber that is easy to find at better sporting goods stores makes good sense.   The .30-30 Win, .30-06, .270 Win., .308 Win, .243 Win are all excellent choices for folks that do not handload(or even if they do).  Its all a matter of personal prefference.  Good luck, keep us posted.
