Primers seatting too deep!?!?
« on: January 05, 2008, 04:46:40 PM »
I don't know if this has been covered or not.  (I don't remember how to do a search)
I am loading for a .475 linebaugh.  I am using starline brass, and CCI 350 primers.  The primers when set all the way in the primer pocket are so deep that the firring pin barely contacts them I wind up with about 3 out of 5 misfires.  Are other primers taller so as to not be so deep in the primer pocket?

Thanks,
Travis

There is a Google bar at the upper left of the screen to do searches with. I am guessing here to be sure...Are you crushing the primers when you seat them? This would appear that they are seated too deep. All primers are the same height and diameter for a particular type. For instance large pistol primers are the same outside dimensions for all manufacturers. What varies is cup thickness. CCI cup thickness are usually heavier than other manufacturers. By having thicker cups, they can usually stand higher pressures with out piercing the primer. The disadvantage is that they take a harder hammer strike to ignite. If you go to a different primer, you may find that you get better hammer strikes and more consistent ignition. Just a couple of possibilities to check out. I do not think that the brass has too deep primer pockets, but I guess stranger things have happened. I would make sure I was not crushing down the primers and if that was not it, change primer manufacture to see if that solves you r problem. Good luck to you and let us know how it works out.

TS

You may want to give Starline a call , i know that there are some larger pistol brass that was made to take large rifle primers , due to the case cap.

Don't know if this may be the case or not with this round , but it may be worth the time of a phone call to check .

This information taken from another reloading forum concerning this same subject (Primer sizes in .475 Linebaugh):

"In a previous column, we talked about some problems in loading, related to primers and the change in specifications to use a large rifle primer. Both Starline and Cor-Bon brass now have a headstamp with “R” to indicate rifle-sized primer pockets. Even though the diameter of large primers is the same for both rifle and pistol the depth of the pocket is not. If you try to put a large rifle primer in a pocket meant for pistol size it’s highly likely the primer will not seat flush with the cartridge rim and this is a recipe for all manner of unpleasantness in a heavy recoiling gun."

As Stimpy said, a call or email to Starline would be in order.   www.starlinebrass.com

EDIT NOTE: The Hornady 6th Edition calls for Large Rifle primers for the .475 Linebaugh.
Checking the height of Large Pistol Primers vs. Large Rifle Primers that I have, there is a difference of .009", with the Large Rifle Primers being taller.

Thanks for the help everyone! I will call Starline in the morning.  I am pretty confident I am not crushing the primers.  I have been very careful in seating them and when they are all the way in they are deep in the pocket.  I was trying to find some of my hornady brass to see if there is a difference in primer pocket depth.

I have e-mailed Starline, and am waiting for them to reply.  In the meantime I did try a large rifle primer in one case and it did seem to be the correct depth.  What would changing from magnum large pistol to large rifle do to my loads.  I am assuming that I should start low and work back up to hopefully where I am now.  I have been shooting 28 grns of H110 under a 420 grain cast bullet.  this load shoot very well (holes touching @ 25 yards)

Not what you are looking for but maybe these can be compared to load data you have for the Magnum Large Pistol Primer:

The Hornady 6th Edition only has two loads for the 475 Linebaugh, 325 gr. & 400 gr. XTP-MAG
(with the Large Rifle Primer - Winchester WLR)

For the 325 gr. they have H 110 loads starting out at 27.8 gr. on the low end and 31.8 gr. MAX
For the 400 gr. they have H 110 loads starting out at 20.0 gr. on the low end and 25.6 gr. MAX

Okay. so I did hear back from Starline today.  They did confirm that the .475 brass was designed to use Winchester large rifle primers.
