I saw a guy shooting a wood stocked 45-70 Handi Rifle with open sights just a few minutes ago in the Plainsman catagory of SASS on TV. It was during coverage of the "Smoke In The Valley" black powder only competition at the new Founders Ranch in New Mexico. I reckognized the rifle instantly and pointed out to my son. He was shooting against guys with Sharps, Ballard and Stevens replicas, doing pretty well to.

Here's the skinny from the SASS rule book.

"Single Shot and Buffalo Single Shot firearms
must be originals or replicas of single shot rifles
manufactured during the period from approxi-mately
1860 until 1899. All rifles MUST have
exposed hammers. The caliber and cartridge
rules for the “Rifle Caliber” firearms noted
above under basic rules also apply to Single Shot
and Buffalo Single Shot rifles with the exception
Buffalo Single Shot rifles must be .375” caliber or larger."

Since the H&R/NEF frames are 1871 designs with exposed hammer I guess they qualify.

I sent an email to S.A.S.S. and the reply was yes they are legal. They did not say but I think you may have to change the rear sight.

Why do you think that? Why did they not state that? I just want to try to understand the reasoning behind your assumption. Does anyone have any definitive information on the legality of the rear sight which comes on a Buff Classic or Target Model in SASS? I do agree the rear sight that comes on it does look period correct...Thanks....<><....:)

The sight that comes on them is just like a receiver sight for a lever action. Which are not legal. Also I read an article someone wrote on them and they said you would have to change the rear sight for Cowboy action.

If they are not...........they sure should be........at least all the pallet wood, standard old time stuff that dates back in basic design to the late 1800's.

BTW-  I really enjoy what I am seeing from this Cowboy Shooting thing.  It looks like a hoot!  Good for them !!

The shotgun wouldn't be very competitive.
