Converting a 4x4 to a 2x4
« on: January 27, 2008, 10:31:34 PM »
I have a 1999 Arctic Cat 300 4x4. The gears in the front differential are shot. Has anyone ever taken the four wheel drive components out and installed the 2 wheel drive axle stub in place of the axles. Is this Possible. I would fix the differential but I've check on the parts to rebuild the differential and it cost $1200. I can go just about anywhere I want in two wheel drive. So to me the four wheel drive in this ATV is not worth $1200. The axle stubs would only cost about $20 a piece. $40 compared to $1200 in an older ATV seems like a better deal right now. If this is possible I could still drive the ATV while looking for a salvage differential. Then fix it for good later. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free.

That is the biggest reason I never wanted  a 4wd quad.  Too many moving parts and the cost of them when they need replacement. I have found that a 2x4 will carry me anywhere I have business going as I just drive around the mudholes. I can't see why you can't convert it.  The 2wd is nothing more that a free axle.

Thanks for the info 30-30man. I have done some more searching on this. I got on Babbittsonline.com and looked at the schematics of the front end components and it looks like they show the same steering knuckle on both the 2x4 and 4x4 so I think I can do this conversion. And Its possibly I will not fix the 4 wheel drive. I might just sell the good parts and get a good winch. I believe that is all I will need.

Check ebay.  There are alot of used parts out there and even a few salvage centers that sell on ebay.  I just replaced the rear differential on my son's Yamaha (which are very prone to breaking) with parts from ebay.

I just would not re-invent the wheel and I would not convert it ...... I would fix it.

I helped friend remove the 4wd from a Polaris once.
We were able to leave the stock hubs.

I can't say it will work on your bike but I wouldn't buy anything until your sure you need it.

Once you get all that weight off the front end you won't need 4wd near as much.

Usually the only time you really need 4wd on an atv is when you off road with the racks loaded heavy.
