New M9
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:03:40 AM »
Just bought a new Beretta M9 from Gander Mountain (I had coupons and gift cert.  ;D). Have yet to fire it (bought it 3 days ago). Anybody have experience with one ? My USMC buds gave it good comments. Also, how do I keep the wife from finding out I bought it ? Also , anybody if smaller grips are available.

ronbow,

I have shot an M9 many times and I even own one now and I love them. Sure they are rather bulky for concealed carry but it is possible. As long as you keep it fairly clean you should be okay with it. Also I don't know if you like the grips on it but Hogue makes some slip on grips that are great. Get some ammo and have a ball. They are far more accurate than most people can shoot. I prefer 124 grain bullets in mine. As far as not letting your wife find out about it... I found out the hard way that is just easier to tell her about and try to get the honesty perk. Otherwise you will never hear the end of it if she finds out. You could always approach it with some tact like saying so what would you say if I got a new gun with my coupon and gift certificate? Who knows she might say okay. Have fun and good purchase.

Once you get enough pistols, rifles, shotguns and muzzle loaders in the house, it will get to the point she'll loose count.  Then you can slip anything through the door you want.

Castaway,

Thank you for making that point also. I had meant to say that in my rambling but forgot to mention it.

I'm curious how your new pistol has been shooting?  How far away can you hit what you're aiming at?

I worked it out to 50 yards and could hit a sporting clay about every third shot at that distance. The gun appears to shoot exactly where you point it. So far have run about 300 rds, of Winchester 9mm 124 gr. with no malfunction. Gonna dress it up with some walnut grips if they fit good.

It wasn't too long ago when I saw the U.S. Army commemorative model M9 with the green grips and it made me think of those days and want one.  I like the fancy commemorative guns, but I plan on shooting my guns and don't want to ugly up a fancy one.  That's how I got started looking at the M9.  The ammo being less expensive is just a bonus on top of it.

For a personal reason I was looking for a M9 (the previous version) in the summer of 2001.  They were out of production and I had 3 dealers looking for one.  None were able to find one.  So I was going to settle for just a plain 92FS.  I got a call from one dealer and said he could get me a Y2K model for about $100 cheaper than the regular 92FS.  Evidently they came out with the Y2K and they just didn't sell, so I took that.  I think it was the next summer, not sure, but I was in my favorite little gun shop and he had a couple of 92FS Commerative issues "Iraqi Freedom" one that he had was with the US Army insignia, the other had the Coast Guard Emblem on it.  I was interested in an Air Force emblem.  He was able to find some for me.  They were presents to my kids for Christmas.

They are great guns and we like to shoot them.  Not a bit of a problem other than one time my daughter got her glove stuck in the slide.  I told her it was better her glove than her hand  :o

Since my last post I bought a M9.  I haven to agree that it's very reliable and accurate.  I haven't gotten comfortable enough with it yet to shoot past 50 yards, but I'll get there eventually.  Next to no recoil in the gun and I can reload the ammo for much cheaper than anything else I have.  I may even put some of the snake shot in it and take it out rabbit hunting.

I am not sure how well the squared end of the shot capsule will feed.  But it sounds like fun.  I reloaded a few of them in .38spl quite a while back.  7 1/2 shot didn't do much damage to a piece of plywood and the pattern spread pretty quick.  I am sure that it would have taken a snake out, but I don't know about a rabbit.  In a couple of shot capsules I stacked .177 pellet gun pellets on their sides.  I think I was able to get between 5 to 7 of them in there.  I weighed the shot capsule with pellets and adjusted the charge accordingly.  They kept a tighter pattern and actually did a little damage to the plywood.  I ran out of capsules before any other activities.  Let us know how they work.

We always called that Beretta bite in the Navy. One guy had it so bad that it took nearly 15 minutes to get him to stop bleeding. Blood was all over the gun and the firing line and he was a feeling a bit woozey by the end of it. So yeah I would say she was really lucky. You have to watch your hand placement when you shoot the M9/FS.
