New handi-rifle owner with a question
« on: January 30, 2008, 05:33:54 PM »
I just bought this one, and I'd like to send it off to have a couple of barrels fitted. The website shows SS barrels, but will the have the same finish as mine?

Not being an expert, but your gun appears to be parkerized. It may be stainless but with the parkerized finish. So if it is, I would say that it won't have the same finish. The SS have much more shine. Again, I'm not an expert, maybe someone else can say for certain.
I shoot first, and don't ask questions.

Welcome aboard! That finish looks painted or parkerized, H&R has offered some shotguns with a similar finish but those I've seen were different, please tell us more about it. The stainless H&R barrels are 400 series SS, are brighter.

I haven't picked it up yet, gotta meet the seller saturday morning. It's stainless. Maybe it's been bead blasted or something? I hope I got a decent deal at $225. It's currently a 45-70, but I'm thinking that I'll send it in for .270 and .357 barrels. Does anyone make some sort of cordura case to fit the gun and a couple of barrels?

See the FAQs and Help, there's a thread link in there on multi barrel soft cases, Cabelas makes a real nice one.

The frame will have to be made 1999 or later for the 270 barrel, you can learn what year it was made in the FAQs also, spend some time in there if you haven't already, there are answers in there that you don't even know you have questions for yet!! ;D

Can nickel be bead-blasted to look that way, since NEF doesn't make SS frames but nickels the standard frames instead?   I am almost betting that is one of the DuraCoat finishes or something along those lines; that could be applied over any of the metals....  ;)

I will echo MSP that was a terrific deal on a good looking Handi. Welcome to the GBO you will find a wealth of info in the stickies and these guys are very knowledgeable about these little rifles. You will enjoy that one I am sure!

Talk about a deal. Last year I was at Gander Mountain making a payment on a layaway. I was looking at their used rifles when I came across a Handi 30-06. They only wanted $121.00 for it. It was in like new condition. Needless to say it followed me home. Dale

Thanks for the info...and the welcomes! I see quite a few firearms specific topics that interest me. This is my first Handi, and I can't wait to pick it up, just hope that first shot doesn't cut me a flip...I'm 155# soaking wet.

You will love it Snal, and welcome aboard. If you are starting with factory ammo try the 300 grain Remington ammo first. Perhaps the
guy you are buying it from will have a few rounds left over, if you are buying it from a store ask if they will throw in a box of ammo.

And Dale, great buy on the 30-06!!!....<><....:)

In my travels around Ohio I always look at Gander stores and Cabelas stores used rack...you never know what you are going to find there. I passed up a deal on a Topper 30-30 with a 12ga. barrel because I was short on cash at the time, that I regret now :-[
