Single shot rimfire for silhouette
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:58:30 PM »
Would like to get a single shot for rimfire silhouette.

I've seen replicas of the Winchester Low Wall offered by Cimarron and by Taylors and Uberti has a Remington Rolling Block.

Does anyone know if the Low Walls are actually made by the same company? Neither website indicates the manufacturer.

Might anyone have experience with any of these? Are they accurate enough for silhouette?

The RB is several hundred dollars less than the LW but I like the "look" of the Low Walls; does either action offer any advantage for this sport?

Thank you.

AFAIK, the Winchesters are made by Miroku. The Cimmaron and Taylor's are Uberti. In my opinion, you would be seriously handicapping yourself by using any of these type rifles for smallbore silhouette. One, you don't know what kind of accuracy to expect until you get it and shoot it. If it's not good enough, then what? Rebarrel and lots of work. Two, how are you going to put a good silhouette type scope on it? Once you do, it'll look goofy anyhow. And third, what about the trigger? Yeah, they can be reworked to be nice. But it's still not top notch and somebody's gotta do it. What about how it fits you? Most of these type rifles don't hang very well for offhand shooting.

Don't think I don't like old style single shots - far from it. But if you want to win, I don't think you're doing yourself any favors going with one. If you just had to do this, my choice would be a nice Martini, since they're available for about half of what the previous ones are and since most have been messed with already I wouldn't feel too bad mounting a scope, carving on the stock, etc.

Nobade:

I appreciate your comments. What action would you suggest? Is the bolt still considered the best choice for accuracy? I'm left handed but I know there are bolt actions made for us southpaws. I know the Ruger 10/22 seems popular but it also seems like virtually everyone who owns one makes changes to it to try to get it "right" (however you may define that).

In truth I don't think I'll have the time needed to practice enough to win and at age 65 I'd be satisfied to just make progress and not embarass myself.

The bolt action really is the best but I have used very successfully in competition rifles using the TC Contender action and semiautos as well. They call can have the accuracy needed or not you'll only know after getting and trying them. But most decent quality rimfires are plenty accurate enough for the game unless you happen to be a master class shooter even then many would work. Still a bolt action really is the way to go if you're going to be serious about being a competitor.

I have shot 7 rim fire silhouette matches so far using a TC Contender carbine.  The trigger is easily tuned on the older style Contender frames which I had on hand as I ordered a G2 complete rifle and switched to the older frame. The single shot doesn't really hamper you as to speed but getting out of position to load it is a slight hindrance though there is really plenty of time anyway. You can't complain about the accuracy of the rifle though there is plenty of rimfire ammo out there good enough for plinking but not good enough for serious practice. I like the rifle more as a small game gun though and plan on getting a CZ 452 Varmint set up to suit me with a little trigger work. I havent decided on the scope yet, Sightron or Weaver KT15 most likely. There is a shooter that does well with a Savage Mark-II-BV.  The facts are that a good trigger means a lot, It's doubtful you will be able to shoot to most rifles capabilities off hand and that rimfire silhouette is a lot of fun.

Something like this would be really nice: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=91733323

There are lots of rifles that are plenty accurate enough, but most need the trigger messed with and the fit worked over to fit the individual. If you need a left hand one, your choices just got a lot smaller. Yes, a 10-22 can be made to work, but you do usually end up putting a lot of money into it to get it there. Just adding a Kidd trigger will set you back about $300. If you start with an Anschutz, you've got a great trigger that won't need anything except adjustment (and if you go with a 54 action it's got one of the alltime best triggers ever) But I've never seen a left hand 54 silhouette rifle. As for out of the box left hand, I'd go with the new CZ lefthand. It'll need trigger work and probably need to be epoxy bedded, but they're great rifles for the money and usually shoot quite well. Personally I've got the hots for the new Weatherby MK22 for hunter class, but it's not available in left hand.

Single shot rifles are legal in the high power silhouette but not the rimfire silhouette.

Since when? It certainly was allowed back when I did it and we have RickT300 saying he's used his in seven matches already. Where did you come by this info they they are not legal?
