Putting my 700 back together. What do you think of my idea's?
« on: January 31, 2008, 02:57:14 PM »
I have had a rough couple months as far as money goes. I as you probably know have a tack driving Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243. I managed not to sell the rifle but ended up selling the custom painted stock and scope off of it because I needed the money at the time. With spring just around the corner work will be picking up for me and I have some ideas I wanted to run by you guy's. I do a lot of Groundhog hunting here in Pa. My shots range from 100 to 500 yards. Most are between 250 and 500 yards because these little guy's get smart fast and know the sound of my truck when I am coming. Anyways the stock I want to put on it is a Ultimate Sniper stock made by Choate. http://www.combatstocks.com/Choate_Ultimate_Sniper_Stock_for_Remington_700_Short_Action.cfm The scope I want to put on it is a Super Sniper fixed power 16x42 or a 20x42. I am leaning toward the 16 power as of now. http://www.swfa.com/pc-4306-231-super-sniper-16x42-30mm-rifle-scope.aspx I also want to make some trips to a 1,000 yard range and try my hand at shooting some real long distance. I have read many many reviews on the Super Snipers and there are really some great reviews out there on this scope. What do you think of my ideas? The reason I am thinking 16 power vs 20 power is because on shots that are 100 yards I don't think I would like the 20 power. Dale

So you don't want my stock anymore? It's cool  ;) Save up for the Choate.

I have Super Snipers, all 10X fixed and love them. The reviews do not lie. You'd have to spend triple to find a scope that matches them in clarity, repeatability, dependability, toughness, yada yada. As soon as you own one, you'll understand, I'll leave it at that. If the Bushy Elite 3200 10X doesn't stack up(arrives tomorrow according to UPS so I can finally take my SPS out next week), it's going back and I'll get another SS in it's place faster than you can say "I love Big Green!"  :D

You may not like the 16X at 100 yards either but you won't know until you try. I may get a 16X for the .300RUM, let me know what you think of the 16X if you go that route. Regardless of what power you get, you'll fall inlove. Don't waste your $$ on the side focus model. save the $100.00 and get the rear focus one.

I'm not familiar with the Choates. I'm sure you'll like it and it's not super pricey either. I'm just so used to all of my heavy barrel Remmys coming with HS that I'm going to stick with them. Let us know how you like the Choate  ;)

I still may want to buy your stock in a few weeks. That way I can get my rifle back together faster and I can always turn around and resell it and get my money back out of it. I do think I am going with the 16 power. Even when I am at the range with a high power scope I have it cranked up that far at 100 yards anyways. Everything I have read about the SS has been good. Some even compare them to the Night Force and the Leopolds. costing many times more. They say it is not as good but for the diference in money they can't be beat. I will let you know what I think of the 16 power. Dale

There are many actual sniper reviews circulating(both military and law enforcement) and they do side by sides with $1,200.00 Leupolds and they walk away very impressed. For a 1/4 of the price can ya go wrong? Nope!  ;D

They also carry a life time warranty. You just send $10.00 with proof of purchase and the problem and they will fix it for free. Dale

Also I am just getting into reloading. I have 175 Hornady 105 grain AMAX bullets. Have any of you ever shot any Groundhogs with these bullets. I think they probably would not expand on a Groundhogs though. I just can't see not using them since I have them. I know they would be great for deer but I would never use a 175 of them on Deer in my life time. Dale

I think when you're putting a fixed power scope on a varmint rifle, it's easy to get too ambitious and get too much power.  I have a 12X that has killed a lot of Pdogs and quite a few Ghogs.  Near and far.
You may be asking too much of a single glass, especially a single power, to go from 100-300 yard gimme's to 1000 yards.  I don't know. I've never shot anything at 1000 yards.

Dale have you thought about the Choate Varmint model instead?

I know of people that have tried both, and liked the Varmint model a little better.
Seemed less cumbersome to them.

 Just a thought.

Yes I have considered the varmint model. I have gone back and forth on it a dozen times. I still may go with the varmint. Dale
