fishing trip
« on: July 20, 2003, 05:01:32 PM »
went to the big lake saturday night and the fishing was great!!!!
I am the only person that caught one but they were biting hard!!!
I pulled in a small 10 to 11" channel cat.   Between 3 of us, we had 5 lines out and as every 10 minutes another line would tighten.
I can tell they were small fish though because we would set the hook and have the fish for a second and then POOF........gone.  So technically they were just holding onto the bait and trying to swim away with it.
And we weren't jumping the gun on setting the hook. The line would be tight for a couple of seconds and the fish would take off.

Although we only caught one, it was still a great night.

And today we went to a local dam and i caught a smallmouth bass using corn!!!    I was actually trying to catch some carp.

I think youre right on track about the little ones. The good ones don't mess around, they grab your bait and try to rip the rod out of your hands. Its always the little ones that are hard to get the hook into. Nothing scientific, just my observation.  Next time hook one of those 10" channels through the tail and throw him back out there.  I know it looks and feels rediculous, but that feeling goes away when you're trying to land a catfish that's bigger than your average 1st grader.  I'm serious, give it a try.

good luck
