New Ruger Hawkeye
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:22:32 PM »
Just got home with a new Hawkeye in 22-250. It's going to be my coyote rifle this year. I was wondering if anyone knows the difference in the new LC6 triggers? I also have M77's in 30/06 (walnut/blued) and .350 Remington Magnum (stainless/synthetic), and the trigger on the Hawkeye is a lot better than the out of the box triggers on the other two. I replaced both of them with Rifle Basix triggers. I'm hoping to be able to use this one as is. Looks like a real nice rifle. I like the new finish on the stainless steel. The new stock is a bit less bulky. I'd appreciate any comments from those who have one of these rifles.

I've handled a couple M77 Hawkeyes.  One was a 24" bbl 7mm mag and the other was a 22" sporter/standard 308.  I "had" to give the 308 back to the clerk before Mr. Visa got out of the wallet.  It felt that dang good to me!   Long story short, Ruger M77s (tangs and MK IIs) have appealed to me overall and the Hawkeye really got my attention.  It wouldn't break my heart to have one for sure.

They do have a very nice feel, but so do the MK2's. The trigger on the Hawkeye is great out of the box. I installed Rifle Basix triggers in both of the
MK2's before I even shot them. I put a Nikon Buckmaster 6x18x40 on it and will be off to the range in the morning.  ;D

I just today bought one in .257 roberts, but don't have a scope for it yet, let me know how it works for you!

MOA with my 40 grain handloads right out of the box. It's a keeper.

The new Hawkeyes are a mighty fine gun - and a heck of a good value. Congrats on your new rifle.

I am extremely pleased with mine.  I got a 338 federal a few months ago, its going elk hunting with me in a couple weeks.  It is the most accurate gun I have ever owned, consistently producing tiny one hole groups at 100yds.  The trigger was not as good as I expected, the sear had to be polished and the weight lightened up about 3lbs.  Also the bolt was "sticky" and had to remove some metal from the receiver - minor repairs and the kind of thing I expect to have to do on a factory gun that costs less than $1200.

I guess I got lucky with the trigger. It breaks at a bit less than three pounds, and is crisp with very little take up and no overtravel. The bolt works smoothly, although I have about 340 rounds thru it now, and countless dry firing in front of the TV including working the bolt, and it has definately gotten smoother already. But, it was ok out of the box.

I like the new matte finished stainless on the Hawkeyes and the Ruger eagle on the floor plate is nice too.

i have a 358 ss myself ,i believe i was one of the first to post a thread here about it.mine is extremely accurate, using reformed 308 rem brass and 200 grn hornady bullets it will shoot sub moa at 100 yds.i have one group of three at less than 3/4".i like to shoot it so well that i am also loading some cast bullet loads for it.you won't be unhappy with yours, trigger is still a little heavy for a bench gun but fine for a hunting rifle,as far as i am concerned, good luck, adker

Good news!! I am leaning towards this gun in .270 Win. I use to be a big Rem 700 guy, but I don`t like how that company is now, so I am moving on to Ruger!! I am a little nervous as my Model 700`s in .270 were serious tack drivers right out of the box. I hope the Hawkeye is a saccurate :)
