I came home from the local gun show today with what I think is a pretty nice (1985) 336 CS in 30-30 win. The blueing is almost perfect and the wood is nice too. I bought some of the Leverevolution 160gr Hornady's and some Remington 170gr Core-lokts. My plans include fixing the cbs as I do not care for it and scoping it for a mule deer hunt. I have not had a 30-30 for some time and am anxious to try it out this coming weekend.

Man I like that. I have been wanted a Marlin for years but just never got around to picking one up. My mom gave my step-dad one for Christmas last year and I have been messing with his a little and feel in love with it. So I think its about time I add one to the stable. That one you got is just the kind I am looking to get.

There is just something about a Marlin lever action that turns my crank. I know you guys know what I am talking about. I have been hitting the pawn shops, gun shops, and gun shows for several months looking for one like this. I have a Marlin Cowboy Competition in .45 colt that I love too and my next one will be a .35 Rem if I can find one around here. I enjoy the Marlin .22 rifles I own too along with a .17 HMR.

I need to get a base and rings before I choose a scope for it. Any suggestions for any of these?

I really like the Weaver one piece base and the low Weaver Tip-off or QuadLoc Rings. The latter are cheap at Walmart. Don't get the 2 piece Weaver base set. You can't position the scope properly.

I found a near twin to your rifle (very close in vintage) this Summer languishing away on a used gun rack here in the Upper Peninsula. It came home for 199.00 plus tax. The rifle had a rust spot on the left side of the receiver and some minor pitting on the left side of the barrel near the muzzle, otherwise, the finish of wood and metal was pristine. The gun had been fired very little. A little tender care with 0000 steel wool and oil removed the rust and the spots were pretty well covered with Perma Blue. The pitting, of course, remains...just not so apparent. I was also fortunate to find a very clean Burris Fullfield in 2.5X (Ebay) AND the older Weaver unit that matched a one piece base with integral tip over mounts (new in the box in an old sporting goods store in my town). It places the scope as low as it can and still allow room for the hammer to function. It's a cute rifle and became a rite of passage gift to my son for his 16th birthday later in the Summer. This rifle handles both Remington 170 gr. CL's and the Hornady LE stuff very well...albeit at very different points of impact. Haven't had a chance to do much other work with it yet.

I have the two piece base on all 3 of my 336 marlins. Two 30-30 and one 35 Rem. Never had any trouble. If you used a compact scope you might, but seems to work fine for me with anything else. I have a 2-10x40 whitetail classic on two of these. Really good combination in my mind. Good luck. You can't go wrong with any 336.

You won't have a problem with 2 piece bases when using a giant varmint rifle scope like a 2-10x40. It's when you use a compact scope designed for a compact rifle like the Marlin 336 that you have problems.

The long tube on a 2-10X40 varmint scope allows for a lot of adjustment back and forth to get proper eye relief. The short tube of a compact scope doesn't. The turrets will hit the rings.

I have on order from Midway, a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x 32 mm and a Weaver single piece scope base. The order should be here tomorrow. I already bought the Weaver Quad-Lock rings at Walmart last weekend but could find nothing else so I placed an order from Midway. Could one of you post a picture of this kind of a setup on your Marlin? As I have never scoped one of my Marlins, the picture would not only help me set it up correctly the first time around, but, it might also help better show the different points of view on one piece vs two piece mounting systems.

I got my scope in today and will be mounting it tomorrow. That Banner looks pretty good on your Marlin. I have never scoped a lever action before but times have changed. The Banner looks like it will work perfectly for what I want to do with it.

Well, during this morning's snowstorm, I finally found the time to get the rifle scoped. I used a one piece Weaver base, Weaver Quad Lock rings, and a new Banner 1.5-4.5 x 32mm scope. I am pretty anxious to get out to sight it in and make final adjustments. I also bought a leather sling at the same gun show I bought the rifle at. A fellow named Monty makes these and it has a thumb hole that really makes it comfortable to carry should I decide to use it on a hunt.

uh ... I took your advice on the base, rings, and scope. The only thing I don't really like is the only Quad Lock rings I could find were "high." I wanted "low" but could not even find a listing on any Internet site. Of the five Wally World's I have access to, only two had the "high" rings and none had "mediums."

The Weaver .336 Marlin one piece base & ring set that Walmart sells for around $11.75, comes with low rise Quad-Lock rings.

Thanks for that tip Swampman. Though none of the local Walmarts had any single bases in stock, maybe I can get one of them to order this base/low ring set for me.
