bore slugging M.N. 91/30 1941 soviet model
« on: January 19, 2008, 05:57:19 AM »
Hello out there in the ether
I have bore slugged my latest rifle a M. N. to see what the bullet should be and to my surprise the slug came out as shiny as a 22 case.  I used a soft lead over sized bullet and a round fishing weight to do the job.  This is not making any sense as the rifling looks very good, crisp and sharp.  It is a very dark barrel.  It is as if I am slugging a smooth bore.  Any suggestions?  Really would appreciate some serious feed back.

thanks

Are you using a big enough sinker/slug?

Someone else suggested to use OO buck pellets to slug 30 caliber bores.

I use .320 blackpowder round balls with pretty good luck on my milsurps, making sure to lubricate them a little before putting them through the barrel.

Little Pete - gotta use a larger sinker.  A 00 buck pellet might work for a 30 bore but may not.  You will know when you have a tight enough fit.

Hey, it you want to have some fun, let the rifle do the work for you.  Load up a few cases with some Unique, maybe 3 gns, add buffer material to keep the powder in place, use sinkers or 00 buck pellets an soft target and mic your recovered slugs.

Whenever I would firelap a barrel I was always interested to note any changes in bore diameter twixt fired and unfired slugs and would regularly recover spent firelapping slugs and measure them.  It was fun.  HTH.  Mikey.

This is a great website.  Thanks to you for your replies and yes I upped the size of the lead sinker and found that I did not have a smoothbore M.N. but a bore that measured out  at .312.  Now on with the reloading and see if this girl will shoot for me.  Again thanks for your speedy and helpful replies.

This http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinSlug.htm is one of the better articles I've seen on bore slugging. Hope it helps. -gary
