Seating Barnes bullets
« on: February 04, 2008, 06:43:19 AM »
A friend of mine is trying to load Barnes 200 grn copper HP in his 44 mag and the HP is being crushed from being so soft when seating the bullet. I don't know if it would help not run the case all the way up in the resizing die or not. I told him he may have to get his machinest buddy to make him a seating plug to fit the bullet.
Has anyone got any other suggestions?
Also does anyone have any loads for this bullet?   THANKS

I can think of three things that may help:
1) Calling Barnes and asking them how to best handle it
2) The seating die comes with a part for round nose bullets and a part for seating flat nosed bullets. Try using the one for round nosed bullets. At least RCBS dies come with the two options.
3) Expanding the case mouth more.

It may be a combination of 2 and 3.

Quester gives good advice.
One thing I would add - if you contact your die manufacturer, they will probably make you a die plug for your exact bullet.
I had RCBS do this for me years ago for a 9MM seater die.  They just had me send in three of the bullets I was using and sent me the plug for free.  Recently, I had Lee make me a custom plug for my 223 die.  They wanted just one bullet and $12.00.  Results were great in both cases.
