Powder charge / lightest???
« on: January 19, 2008, 02:48:54 AM »
What is the lightest charge of 2 F,that can be loaded into a 50 cal flint lock, with a 240 to 300 grain sabot. I mostly use 70 to 80 gr.,but i wish to take my Grandson and have him be my shooting partner. He is a good sized young man,but would prefer to break him gently!!!!

Are you going to shoot at deer with this??? Or just plinking...

If just plinking, you can go down to 40-50 grains, possibly even lower...
Your gun will have to tell you if it's accurate though...

You may get a better response in the Traditional forum, but I have loaded my flintlock all the way down to 20 grains of Goex FFG and it still fired everytime and very fun to shoot, just for fun mind you. At 50 grains FFG, the gun is still very accurate and very little kick. How old is your grandson? I love shooting 50 grains FFG all day for fun. I use a patched roundball and PA conicals, but that wieght of Sabot would work well, with hardly any kick. 40 grains should work as well.

Read the sticky in the Traditional forum on what can and can't be discussed there, if Willyp didn't specify sabots, it would have stayed there where he originally posted it. ;)

I would stick around 40 grains. It should be very mild recoil.

Willyp,

I shoot 40gr of Pyrodex P under sabotted 240gr bullets in my 50 cal in-line all the time. It is mild recoil. A good plinking load.

In my 50 cal caplock rifle I shoot patched round balls and 50gr of Pyrodex P. It's very mild recoil as well. I've shot 40gr charges as well with no problems, but 50gr is more accurate in my rifle.
