Steyr 25-06 Pro hunter
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:15:47 PM »
I picked up a clean used one at a local show this past weekend as I have been wanting to add a 25 06
I killed a bunch of deer in South Texas shooting one of my dads that had of course been worked on and dialed in with handloads..

what is the general impression on these guns?
this one has the newer version of the stock (black vs grey)
barrel is freefloated and the trigger has no creep and breaks at about 2lbs, feels about like my Sakos and Tikka

I haven't got it out to shoot it yet
it's got a fairly thin barrel so I would expect it to heat up with much shooting

if anyone has one and can provide some feedback as to accuracy and what loads have worked well for it I would appreciate it
I got 4 boxes of Federal Premiums for it with 117g Gameking BTSPs, I love that bullet in my 308 and a call to my dad revealed he had loaded the 100g version of that for the rifle I had hunted with and it was a lights out experience for any deer  or hog that got unlucky enough to be seen crossing a sendero :)

thanks in advance
I am trying to decide if I want to keep it or not because it was sort of a spontaneous purchase and I had just bought a new Sako the day before... kind of gone overboard lately on gun purchases and am toying with the idea of just selling it before I shoot it, if it by chance likes that load I got for it that's going to make me want to keep it!
if not, I got the brass and some 100g gamekings for it already, just need the dies

Steyr rifles may well have the best factory barrels in the business. You should get above average velocity since they have "fast" barrels. Their safety system is second to none . I suggest you shoot it first and see. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

cool
I had always thought of them as a "premium european brand" but don't know anyone who shoots one and they don't get discussed much on the forums

I have always had a soft spot for Sakos
my dad has one he built in 66 (22-250) that's killed a ton of deer and I have a '59 243, both are tack drivers
I have had a few Tikkas, my  308 T3 light is a one holer at 100 yards and I just got a sako 75 in 308

get it out, shoot it and report back
