My First Tikka
« on: January 11, 2008, 03:26:19 PM »
I bought my first Tikka this past week. I wanted a really light rifle chambered for a cartridge that I could use for big game. I picked the T3 Stainless Lite in 30/06. I had looked at others, but I had read a lot of good reports on the accuracy, crisp adjustable trigger and smooth gliding bolt of the Tikka rifles and was sold on them. As soon as I got it home I installed a Limbsaver pre-fit recoil pad and ordered a Deadnutz scope mount for it. The scope mount should be delivered on Monday which unfortunately keeps me from shooting it this weekend. I already worked up a few 180gr. loads to try in it.

I have the same model. I installed the same pad as well. I couldn't wait and used the factory rings. They work great. I put a Weaver V9 Classic on mine.

Mine shot regular old Remington 150gr. psp Core-Lokts so well, I didn't even try any other loads! ;D

Good luck, I think you'll love it.

Well the scope mount came two days early and I think I'll get a chance to shoot it tomorrow. I mounted a Leupold 2.5-8x40 on it. Here's a photo.

From what I've seen you should love that rifle.  I had an older Tikka in 243 and it was a very nice rifle...just didn't need that specific caliber.  But of the 3 other ones I have seen, from friends and relatives, ranging from 243 to 270wsm they are a great rifle.

I've pretty much finished load development for my Tikka S.S, Lite 30/06. I had it at the range today and made some final scope adjustments. Here's some target photos and load info.

These were my first three shots from a clean barrel. No fouling shots fired. The load used Sierra 168gr. MatchKing bullets over 57.0gr. of IMR4350 with a COL of 3.300". Three shots at 100 yards measured.40" center to center.

In this last group I had used Sierra 180gr. bullets over 56.0gr. of IMR4350 with a COL of 3.300". This group measured .54".
All groups were fired at 100 yards. These were the only four targets I shot today using the Tikka rifle.

I just started working up a load for the same rifle, T3 30-06.  I'm working the the 168gr TSX and IMR 4350.  So far, I'm getting 1.5" to 2" groups.  Any suggestions?

I've shot Barnes in a lot of different rifles and I've noticed they do like a clean barrel. They are also greatly affected by the overall cartridge length. I usually load bullets .020" off the rifling, but Barnes recommends starting at .050".

I have a postage scale so that's not a problem. The rifle with a Leupold 2.5-8x40 scope mounted with DeadNutz base, empty magazine and flip open scope covers weighs 7lbs. 3ozs.

My t3 30/06 will shoot 5 Hornady Light Magnum 150sp into one big hole at 100 yards.  This is the reason I have yet to reload for it.  You might want to try this round in a reload?

Wow! I'll have to try a box of those.  I want to reload just for the satisfaction of killing deer with a bullet that I made.  The Federal Fusions I've been using were plenty accurate and effective for hunting.  However, if there is a store bought bullet that will produce one ragged hole accuracy, I'll put all my newly acquired 30-06 reloading stuff on Ebay.

One more thing too.  Buy about 5 boxes of cheap stuff or load up some cheap stuff and put that down the tube before you really go to find a good load/ammo.  I nearly gave up on a Sako 7mm-08 that I bought new and couldn't find a load.  I just loaded up a bunch of spare parts and shot the thing and now it's a .5 grouper!!!  Hang with it.

And clean between every 5 shots or so.
