410 for Turkeys? Good idea?
« on: March 05, 2007, 03:10:29 PM »
I have a friend that's also disabled and she was wondering if a 410 would work on Turkey?

Possible?  Yes.
Good Idea? No.

Get a 20 or perhaps even shoot 1 oz 2 3/4" 12ga loads.  Maybe out of a heavier auto that will reduce recoil.

Get close....real close.  Find a gun you can scope, with the small payload, accuracy is everything.  Forget just plain bead sights, not precise enough for the accuracy you'll need.  If there is someone going with her that can carry the gun, find a heavy 20 ga for her to use, and get her a shoulder recoil pad to wear.

You better check the rules for the area you are going to be hunting. Here in KY you can not hunt with anything smaller than a 20 gauge.

Good Idea.  IMO no.

I have never really looked into them but didn't one of the large ammo companies come out with a reduced recoil shot shell.  I know they did with rifle cal.  A 20 with a 2 3/4 shotshell of #6's should be light enough.  My best friend with MD uses this for squierll.  I carry the gun until he is ready to shoot leaning against a tree for support.  This setup should be good on turkey to about 30 yds.

If legal I would say it depends on how close you feel you can get. If you can get a nice pattern a 15 yards or less it will get the job done. The problem is getting a gun to pattern decent with the larger (4-6) shot. The few years I have drawn a tag I have been easily able to get within 15 yards of a couple of birds and feel confident a 410 would have gotten the job done. The other thing is I am assuming you will be there also and can provide backup with a larger gun if needed. Another option yet may be to find some 2 1/2"  or 2"( aguila) 12 gauge shells of appropriate shot size and use those at a reduced range.
Just another worthless opinion!!

A fully choked 3" shell with a full load of #7 1/2s will get the job done out to about twenty yards. One fairly well known turkey killer took a couple hundred gobblers with a .410. He could increase his range to thirty by firing both barrels of a double at once, though. A short barreled twenty gauge with a bipod is probably a better choice.

Check the hunting regs. Same story here in NH, nothing smaller than a 20 gauge.
