New Huntsman

I picked up a 2001 Huntsman at the gunshow last weekend.

I called and checked with NEF and unfortunately it was sent out of the factory as a Muzzleloader only  :-\


So I was wondering where I find out what the max load for it 100 or 150?

If it is the small breechplug and the 26 inch barrel it is most likely rated for 150. NEF or H&R should be able to get an owners manual for the rifle if you give them the serial number. I do not know why you did not ask when you checked on how it was shipped. If it went out as a muzzleloader only it is likely the one that will accept shotgun barrels but not rifle barrels. That is what mine is and it is rated for 150gr.

Hofs01,

Are you sure that is a 2001 Huntsman? If it is, I just learned something new, I was sure they didn't come back out until 2002. Does yours say ~HUNTSMAN~ on the receiver? NR Serial #? Blued or Stainless Steel?

No they are not both rated for 150, the only difference in the rifles is 2" of barrel. Some of the older ones, both 24" and 26" had 7/8" breech plugs, since 2005 they are 5/8" plugs. The 26" barrels were the only ones rated for 150 grains.

Here is what my 2003 Owners manual says for a 24" SS Huntsman. These are recommended loads for accuracy. Disregard the .45 caliber information, they never released those.

This is exactly what it says in the Owners Manual, but remember they did not offer the 26" barrel until 2004. 2002 and 2003 were only 24" barrels.

"NOTE: These loads are recommended for optimum accuracy. Exceeding them is not likely to increase performance and can result in higher pressures and unsafe conditions. Do not exceed propellant manufacturers' recommendations. Loads recommended for FFG black powder may also be used for Pyrodex RS on a volume basis. This rifle is designed to use #209 primers."

Busta...I was just looking at my owners manual that was printed 5/04 and a few of the values have been bumped up a bit. Conicals went up to a max of 490 gr. with sabots going up to 300 gr....charges were bumped up too. Do you think that relates to my 26" barrel vs the 24"? That's the kind of thing that should be called out don't you think? Does NEF make two difference owners manual? Maybe we should make sure everyone is aware since barrels get traded and sold around here so much.....

Yes, I am aware of the heavier charges and projectiles for the 26" barrels. It would be nice if someone could post a photo of scan of the 26" barreled loads and they could be put into a FAQ sticky.

In 2004, I know some of the barrels had 7/8" breech plugs, they all went to 5/8" in 2005 I believe. I don't know if the loads are exactly the same with the different size breech plugs, whether 24" or 26" barrels.

It would be nice to see what loads are printed for the following:

24" barrel 7/8" breech plug. = see my previous post (pre 2005 models)

26" barrel 7/8" breech plug. = ??? (2004 model)

24" barrel 5/8" breech plug. = ???

26" barrel 5/8" breech plug. = ???

Thanks Tim....I already tried but since I'm not a moderator any more, it won't work. This isn't very good but I'm dropping it til the "Lady" gets home to see what's up w/the scanner. Looks pretty blurry. The scanner should be better. You decide.

Tim....I DO have a scanner but....I've tried to get it to talk and it won't. I figured I'd drop the photo now so folks can see what we're talking about RIGHT NOW and I'll get a better copy of it posted in a bit. The girls are "shopping" right now. I find the difference in printed load limits pretty significant........

Jay.....you really do have cabin fever....this book came with my 26" carbon(blued) barrel that was purchased by "another"....I think it could be pretty significant since so many of us trade barrels around here....how many times do you get a book with a barrel you've traded for?

5/8 breach plug is in my barrel.

I spoke to Jennifer from H&R today, she told me that any Huntsman with a 26" barrel is rated for 150 grain.

Two triple 7's in a Huntsman .50 will take down anything u want.  One pellet is equal to 50 grains of powder.  I have a 24 inch barrel on my Huntsman.  I use  245 grain powerbelts and you just can't beat the combination.  Now, I also have a new Sidekick I just picked up and it has a 26 inch barrel.  I'm using the same load with it and I'm surprized at the difference in how the gun shoots with the same load.  It's a world of difference.  The Sidekick barrel, just two inches longer will reach out and make shots I never could make with the Huntsman 24".  I've heard the extra two inches allows the pyrodex to more completely "burn" and gives you that extra boost.  I believe it.  I'm going to send in my Huntsman in and have H&R put a 26 inch barrel on it because I'm so stoked with the difference in barrel length and the extra reach it gives me :)  I read on a post somewhere that the matched a little cheapie Sidekick against an $8,000.00 Italian gun and it shot closer groups!!  That's my story and I'm stickin' to it :)  Dave.

I was at the range one day shooting my .17 HMR Sportster. My gun with the scope and all set up as it was cost me just under $250. Another member came up with a Marlin 1717D (.17 HMR) with a Unertel scope and custom made mounts, he had about $2500 invested, a 10 to 1 ratio of cash. My little  Sportster out shot his Marlin at 50 yards. My .17 HMR Sportster came out on top accuracy wise with each of us shooting our own guns and when we switched and shot the others gun as well. But his gun did cost about 10 times as much as mine, he could take some pride and solace in that.
Priceless!!!, or perhaps just less price?....<><....:)

I got way too many muzzleloaders. By far the most accurate, and the rifle that I've shot most of my big bucks with is: 80gr 777, with 245gr Powerbelt out of my 24" Huntsman barrel, mounted on a 45/70 frame... The barrel cost about $70 bucks! Big plus is that it's the easiest for me to deal with as well. I still have the original primer carriers. Just don't shoot enough to bother with any other ignition system!

Bought my Huntsman .50 brand new in 2002.  I bought, oh, about 5,000 (haha, just kidding) maybe a hundred of those primer carriers and I'm still using the original 5.  I ain't never gonna run out of the things haha.  Got an itch to buy another gun and got a Sidekick.  It's a shame they don't use the case hardening bluing technique on the Sidekicks the way they did the Huntsman.  It's a far superior finish and it's nice looking.  You can't interchange nothing on the Sidekick.  So, if you found a case hardened receiver you couldn't change it 'cause the barrel won't fit anything that the Sidekick.  It's more of a shame they don't make the Huntsman anymore period.  It is a very nice little gun.  My next project is to send one of my rifle frames in and have a 26 inch Huntsman barrel put on it.  The SB2 receivers are solid steel and not cast iron like the SB1's which gives you a better receiver and with that 26 inch barrel on it I plan on shooting it plenty :)  Just wanted to write something and this is what came outta my head :)  Happy shooting.  Dave.

Thanks for sharing. Come often and stay late. I have a 2003 SS Huntsman and was sure the NEF Huntsmans didn't come back out until the 2002 model year like yours. Somebody (can't remember who), posted a while back that they had a 2001 Huntsman, but when I questioned him about it I never received a reply. Do you remember if they were available in 2001 with a NR serial #? I take it yours has a NS serial #?
