Big black critter in the trap Sat

Friday while checking traps I found the gate down on my buddies trap and nothing inside.  All around the trap were some nice size hog tracks.  So, I figured that I would re-set the trap and Sat find the big hog inside, or so I hoped.  Sat I arrived at the lease and drove the Mule to check the traps.  As I drove closer to the first trap I could see that the door was down, but the brush obscured the trap itself.  

So I continued slowly towards the trap and saw something large and black inside the trap moving around.  All right, caught that big hog I thought. Just then I saw movement outside the trap in the brush and then reallized there was a large german shepherd looking mix dog outside the trap  that moved into the thick brush to the left of the door.  Inside the trap I saw a very large black dog.  Thats right a large uncollared black dog trapped in the hog trap.  Huh? I stepped off the Mule and the large shepherd mix appeard to the right of the trap in the brush.  It had circled around and appeared cloes by and began a aggressive I am gonna eat you bark.  After removing the aggressive dog, I ended up releasing the large trapped black dog.  

Wierd huh?  I am wondering still, why that dog was inside the trap?   Niether of the dogs had a collar or tags,  but old faded what looked like a flea collar only.  Maybe they had been dumped,  not sure.

Wierd for sure.  What are ya baiting with?  My place is so far out back that any stray dogs would likely be packing canteens.  At the risk of sounding heartless (I'm not--I love dogs) I think I would have "removed" them before they started running deer and maybe calves too.

with plain corn.   One of them was permanently banned from the place if you get my meaning, the other got a second chance.

 Your to kind. I had the same experience, a couple of months ago. Only my live traps, were only made for racoons.  Well you can guess my surprize when I checked the traps one morning (3 traps different locations) and two of the traps had two rather large mix breed labs in them. that is one in each trap. I dispatched both of them. Thats two less dogs chasing my deer. You see last deer season, I was all sit up in a tree stand and all of a sudden 3 large mix breed dogs came a chargeing out of the woods chasing a real nice 10 point buck. I let the ten point go and was able to dispatch 2 of the 3 dogs. :twisted:  :-)
   There is a real problem with wild dogs, that alot of the hunters are having and in some sates, they have wild dog hunts, like you would hunt for coyotes. In fact, know mix breeds that do mate with coyotes become very smart as a coyote and just as blood thirsty. Only they kill for pure pleasure. Ive been told and saw for myself that they kill and dont eat everything. Like they was killing for fun.
    I killed 18 stray dogs last year alone, and my deer population and turkey, is coming back strong.

Mark c :  If you are baiting with corn or any other grain product, thats exactly what regular dry dogfood is made out of with other additives, we have had problems with the feed bunkers we have for cattle and stray dogs start hanging around getting into the feed, usually only there a short time...thats right period.    JIM

thats what I bait with, plain ole corn straight from the bag.  I may regret letting the one dog leave alive though.   Was up in a climber opening morning of bow season on this same lease 2 years back and had 2 does come in, they were a bit too skiddish I thought,  but when one stopped under my tree stand, not 10 yards, I began to stand to shoot.  Both does moved across the road and then disappeared only to be followed by 5 dogs.  I was standing now and arrowed one.  5 ran off, and then 4 came back so I released a second arrow, and 4 ran off, but none ever returned.    I won't be as kind if I see that dog again.
