500 smith & wesson
« on: February 10, 2008, 12:25:42 PM »
I was browsing the local gun shop today as i usually do on the weekends and came across a used handi in 500 s&w mag. Good shape, had the fiber optic sights on it. $225 with box and papers. Probably less with cash and a little dickering. I think im holding out for a new 30/30 or 44 mag (ktp has a nib sb2 44) whaddya think?

I think either the 30-30 or a NEW .44 Mag is better by far than the 500 S&W chambering....<><....:)

I'd not buy a 44mag unless it's a new one as MSP recommended, one with a barrel made by Marlin in 2007, a frame serial number prefix of NX or HX and matching last 3 digits on the left side of the barrel underlug, if it's older, don't buy it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure when Marlin started making the barrels last year, or if it was earlier, so there's no positive way to know unless you get an accessory barrel fitted to the 500 or 30-30 frame after you buy it, any accessory barrel will be current production and those are the good ones, older 44mag barrel had oversize bores and were almost impossible to get to shoot good without going to oversize cast bullets.

Concerning the 500 Handi, I'd ask to remove the forend and make sure it locks up tight with no wiggle, they're known for shooting loose, H&R will replace any barrel that does, but you should know what you're getting into up front.  Speaking of that, their recoil with factory ammo is not user friendly and they get sold a lot in our classifieds due to that and the expensive ammo. If you handload, you can load it any way you want from 350-440gr cast bullet loads with Unque or Trail Boss, to hot loads with 700gr cast bullets and Lil'gun at 1400+fps. But if it's a big bore you want, the 45-70 is the one to have, but that's a topic for another discussion. ;D

;D yup, that's another discussion...I will be getting a new accessory barrel in .44 Mag from the factory when I can get the funding, however right now my daughter's upcoming wedding is taking up just about ALL of my funding...but that's a good thing!!!....<><....:)

Yeah i already have the big ole 45-70 so ive got the big bores covered anyway. Plus, 53 bucks for 20 rnds is a bit extreme.

I think the powder and bullet manufacturers are related to the guys that produce gas.  :-[

kojak'

if you're mad at your wallet then buy the .500 Smith.   if not, buy something that'll get the lesser jobs done since you've got the .45-70.    why not a .30-30 that you can handload?   now that's relatively cheap centerfire shooting.

just my two cents,

I'd like to have a .500 S&W, but if they shoot lose I don't want one.

Depends on the loads, but many have been returned to the factory for replacement, but so have 270s, 30-06s and 308s. I bought a used 500 barrel that locked up loose on over twenty of my late model frames, so I did the first underlug improvement on it, see the FAQs for that.  ;)

Do you guy's think a 45/70 with hot loads with say around 3-400 grn. bullets would have the same issues. Not that it will be shot a lot, but when it is shot it will be with all the performance that can be had accuratly.

No one has reported a loose barrel on a 45-70, but most folks don't shoot hot loads in them, the recoil is no fun, so they stay in or near mild trapdoor loads, but the same can't be said for 500 factory loads.
