.357 reloading question
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:39:55 AM »
I have been reloading for my Ruger 4 5/8" Stainlesss Blackhawk using Rem brass,Win small pistol mag primers,158 gr Nosler JHP over 16.7 grs of Win 296.I currently don't have access to my chrono(long story)and I was wondering if anyone used a load similiar to this or had a good estimate of the velocity I'm getting out of the 4 5/8" barrel.Thanks.

I have a S&W model 19 6" barrel with 16.5 win 296 and 158 jhp bullet I get 1520 fps so I would estimate 1475 to 1500 fps with your 4 5/8 barrel hope thats close enough Lorne

Ranger 76,
No offense, but either something is wrong with your chronograph, or you have the fastest model 19 on the planet. I've tested lots of loads through lots of 357's over several different chronographs, and that's not even close. Real world numbers are more like 1200-1300 with that load. I currently have a Model 27-8 3/8" that takes 17.0 grains to do 1275 with that bullet weight. Same load goes about 1000 out of my 3" mod. 66. That load may break 1500 out of a 10" non-vented barrel, but a revolver- no way.
