gun finishes
« on: February 06, 2008, 04:43:29 PM »
Hey everyone, I was just wondering what other metal finishes are available for the do it yourselfer besides bluing? I would like to change the finish on my barrel and frame but I wasn't sure if there is some sort of parkerized finish or something else I could do myself.

Thanks  Jeff

Most finishes can be done by an individual but rapidly become too expensive for a single gun.. Plating is perhaps an exception although electroless nickle is not too bad, just too expensive for a 1 time deal..

You can also paint the firearm with spray coatings or even powder coating.

Parkerizing is dead easy and cheap to do.  It does not need the level of cleaness of buling.  I sand blast the steel to be finished and it takes about 10 minutes in the tank.  I have a piece of 3 inch PVC pipe with a cap on one end, I put a 110 volt water heater element in the bottom.  Get it hot (about 175 degrees) and lower the barrel in.  Manganese sulphate make a very hard dark gray finish.  Here is a couple of pictures.  Larry

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

I have used Ms Moly on several guns. It is a bit on the grey side but buffs out rather nicely. My first gun to get it was done 11 years ago and is holding up fine. I also used it on an exhaust bracket for my motorcycle and weather and heat don't seem to have affected it at all after for years. Good luck, Guy
