Savage Model 10 ML II & Accurate 5744
« on: February 15, 2008, 09:53:21 AM »
I recently bought a new Savage Model 10 ML II from a local gun shop and am gathering assorted hardware and information. I bought a Lyman bullet mold in 458 caliber to cast 330 grain hollow point bullets.

I am hoping these cast bullets will work in my 1895 and my new ML. That would be very cool.

I am looking for a load using Accurate 5744 to use in the Model 10 ML for this bullet and other 458 bullets that weigh 300, 350, 405 and 440 grains.

I would be willing to use other smokeless powders that this rifle is designed to use. I may be asking too much of this rifle to shoot the heavier bullets. Thank You in advance for any information.

Cast bullets don't do to well in the ML2, unless you cut down on the velocity.  I have been shooting this gun for a couple of years, and am not an expert on it by any-means.

I shoot the 250 SST, over 43 grains of 4759 in a harvester short to get a velocity of 2275 +/-.  This gets me under an inch at 100 yards, and venison in the freezer.  As an inexpensive practice/hunting alternative, I also shoot the .452 XTP in 250g.  Same load, almost the same result.  I haven't shot the 5744 load yet, but I do have a can of it.  For some high speed fun, try some 4198.  I hit 2600 fps with the 250's, but I forget the load.

For maximum accuracy, let the barrel cool off between shots.  A warm barrel will change the flexibility of the sabot, which will change the accuracy of the load.

Check out Doug's message board for a savage ml2 dedicated forum.  LOTS of good info there..

Good luck

KB,

Thanks for the helpful info. I will check out Dougs message board. I have a quantity of .451 xtp's in 250 and 300 grain to use and some 405 grain jacketed .458 bullets to use with the mmp orange sabots.

Try that. Like he said the High Velocities and cast bullets do not work well.
