Mosin Nagant 91/30 question
« on: February 18, 2008, 04:07:47 PM »
Looking to get a M/N 91/30...what is the difference between the "hex" receiver and the round style...besides the outward appearance...is one more desirable than the other?
M1, M1A, 03A3, SMLE, No4 Mk1, No5 Mk1, Geweher M 1898, 98k (2), M44, Type 99, SKS, FNC, SAR-48, CAR-15 and civilian stuff too.

The original Mosin receivers were the hex ones. The later ones were round. Some say the hex is stronger.I have never noticed any difference in either one in that respect.

Like Stan said, really no difference in strength at all.  The hex being older will typically bring a bit more $$
I like the hex just because they will often have the older Russian markings as well as the Soviet markings.  There are also different round recievers depending on when built (e.g. pre-war and during WWII)

Check out 7.62x54.net for a good run down of all the various types and yearly production numbers.  Buy one and go from there. Mosins are pretty addicting.

As with any milsurp, look for a good bore.  Bluing on most Mosins is surprisingly good.  The stocks can be easily touched up with some 0000 steel wool and thinly mixed shellac.

The hex receivers were used by the Finns as the action on their superb M39, the ultimate Mosin Nagant, so they can't be too bad.

Addictive isn't the word...I am beginning to realize that I just might have to have more than one!!!  Hears my plan...Get a nice Hex early 91/30...then a M38 and a M44 to round out the WWII collection...I think the thing to compair it to would be crack!!!!!
