.30cal Sabots

I was wondering if any of you all had tried these in your .308 Handis. I found a site that sells them and thought they would be fun. .223 55grn bullets are plentiful and figured they would be a low recoil plinker/200 yd varmint popper.

I've used the eabco ones in my 30-30 . they were a little tricky. At first I thought it was just that they sucked, but then did some serious measuring on my loaded cases and figured out that they were seated just slightly off the base in some and they were erratic. I then tapped them on a table to make sure the bullets were fully seated and groups improved. I got about inch to 15/8 groups depending on the wind and my consistency. that;s about as good I've gotten with 30 cal bullets in that barrel.

If you want a real screamer, load them in the .30-06. I vaporized a feral cat with one a few years back.

I expected several discouraging post on the subject.... back when Remington made them in 308 I shot a few boxes for fun. 2" groups were the norm out of my BLR. Not bad and much cheaper than another rifle.

I can quite imagine most loads I have seen say 4,000fps or better :o

I had a box of Remingtons for my 30-30 once.
Seemed to shoot all rite from the iron sights.
Never put them on paper.
Back then the rifle was just a tool not the hobby it self.

They were a nice tool for a one rifle boy.
Anybody that has a .30 cal and not a .22 centerfire should try them in his rifle.

I find in my 30-30 they work well but in my 308 not good at all

Must be the twist rate of the barrel.

I tried them back in the late 70s when Remington first came out with them.  I shot them out of a Ruger 30-06, could not keep them on the paper at 100 yards (12"X12"), never considered them again.

I have a quart of the LAST one's that  Remington sold off at the end of their experimenting with them.

The fellow that I got them from got 5000 fps from a 300 WM.

That was about 10 years ago, someday I'll try them.

They still have them for 30-06 and 30-30

Seems odd to me that Remington reintroduced them in 30-30 and 30-06 but not 308
