460 S&W KATAHDIN info please.
« on: February 10, 2008, 09:46:53 AM »
Hi all.
I was thinking on a 357 max as many shoot 38/357mag also.nobody has these in stock i called SSK and they said they are made with a factory forcing cone to shoot all three and they would do 357 max but with normal throat for best accuracy and don't recommend
shooting the others in their chamber.

also lots of tid bits on 460 S&W and also shooting 454 and 45 colt.this would also fit my needs as i could load 45 colt for the kids to play with.

Midway has the 460S&W KATAHDIN stainless fluted 20" in stock. looking for some info if anyone can help.

#1 is 20" long enough to get max velocity out of the 460 as they also sell a 24" 45 colt barrel?
#2 any one have this barrel that can tell me how it shoots with the 460?
#3 do you shoot 454 or 45 colt also how do they do?
Thanks for your time and any info you can share.

I've just started playing with one.  The best group I've had is Hornady 300 grain XTP/Mag bullets over a starting load of AA1680.  About 1.5" at 75 yards and just under 1900 fps.  I'm looking at this as a 200 yard whitetail gun.  I've shot a few 45 Colt plinker loads (about 850 fps) and they do OK for small game at 25-50 yards.  I like the handling qualities of the 20" barrel a lot better than the 26" 44 mag barrel I had.  I'll be playing with Hodgdon H110 and Hornady's SST muzzleloader (pointed tip) bullets.

Roger How do the 45 colt rounds group?
I was also thinking on the 460 for a short range deer gun
for something different to play with.
Thanks Kurt.

A couple of inches at 50 yards, that's with home cast 250 grain bullets

I have a Katahdin in 460 and it shoots 454 Casull and 45 Colt very nicely, much better than any 460 load I have found.

I'm thinkin that the difficulties that you guys are having with accuracy -- is due to the fact that -- wasn't that round developed for a progressive twist???  Or am i wrong in thinking this??
