new vaquero

traded for a vaquero, new model, 4 5/8" barrel, blued. It's in .357. I keep reading how we shouldn't shoot heavy loads in the .45 colts because the frame can't take it like the older style rugers would. Does that also hold true for the .357? I can load that as hot as I want, within reason, right?

No it shouldn't apply to the .357 Magnum as there is plenty of metal there. Can you load it as hot as you want? Well now that would depend on how hot you wanna load it. I'd say up to book max loads it is fine, beyond that you are on your own with all of them even the FA83 aka Model 353.

   Just like the 45 model of the New Vaquero, the .357 one uses a mid-sized cylinder frame and cylinder.  Less material means less strength.  Any load within SAAMI specs is quite safe but going over that is as always at your own risk.  It blows you own all the broken pieces.  If you need to hot rod the .357 mag over SAAMI specs, it woud've made more sence to go with a more powerful cartridge to begin with.   Remember, these models are desinged and marketed for the SASS folks who have no need for any hot stuff.

never meant to exceed max loads. just wanted to know if it had enough metal around the cartridge to take the same range of loads as any other .357.

Its plenty strong for any 357 load that is within reason. Its not a full size gun, but it will shoot anything factory loaded with ease....and do it forever.

Like 2 dogs said it will last forver if you stick with factory level loads or legitimate loads out of any loading manual.

couldn't be any happier with the vaquero. I was wrong though, it has the 5.5" barrel, not 4 5/8." My wife and I took it to the range tonight and with cheapo Blazers I could shoot 2" groups offhand at 50 feet. I know that's not wonderful accuracy but it tells me it has a lot of potential with me on a "good" day and with reloads I can tailor to it. The wife even liked it. It is very smooth and the new pawl is awesome...no more going JUST past the chamber and having to spin it around for another try. And when I punched out the empties....it actually punched them OUT. The pin is long enough to fully push them all the way out, and the chambers are so smooth and finished so well that none stuck or were rough in extraction.

Overall, I love it and it has a permanent home. The odd thing is that I almost did not buy it due to the lockup not being as tight as I liked. Apparently it isn't always about how much I can make the cylinder wobble, but whether it lines up straight with the barrel when it DOES stop moving.

I will be looking for another one in .45 colt...

If you want a '.45 Magnum', get a Blackhawk.  But in reality there isn't much that a big, flatnose, .45 bullet moving about 1000 fps won't do!  And that's attainable in loads safe even in a Colt SAA.  I love my New Vaquero!  44 Man

Going to jump in also.  I have 2 New Vaqueros and am pleased with both of them.  If the grips don't suit you check in some gunfighter style grips.

The top one is American Holly from Bearpaw grips, in the gunfighter style



and the bottom one came with the Davidson's Limited Edition, Eagle grips in the gunfighter style.

I am interested in a light easy rugged gun for the truck etc. and I want a vaquero or a USFA... I am leaning to the vaquero heavily though... I was initially paranoid about the fixed sight thing...
I can tell you like yours and that they shoot well for you...
those posted pics sure look nice. I can see a vaquero in my future.
furnish another range report and tell us what it likes to shoot best...it could likely have a favorite and a least favorite.. some of mine have markedly different personalities and dislikes..

Nice features!
When punching out those empties (with your older model) I have learned to put a very subtle amount of pressure on that ejector rod with the case rim still in contact with the frame by a few thousand's...doesn't take a whole lot of
Practice and you will have the cases jumping into the palm of your hand.
Have fun with that new gun!
