range report
« on: February 24, 2008, 12:13:10 PM »
wow ! i am extremely impressed with my new 45-70 BC. i shot it today for the first time. its wearing a pallet wood monte carlo buttstock  and a schnable forend. the 32 in. barrel has a weaver 82 scope rail carrying a simmons scope. all i did was get it sighted in today, 10 rounds of hornady's 300gr. jhp pushed by 47 grains of H4198. recoil was mild, only a solid push and thump at the shoulder. i shot from the bench at 100 yards to get a zero. bore sighted, and 3 shots to get it in the X .  2 seperate 2 inch groups about 3 inches high at 100 yards. instant addiction to the 45-70 ! i cant wait to set up on a hog next week !

Glenn buddy you went and done it now , you'll be spending twice as much time in the shops from here on out . first you will look over all the guns then you will be looking over all the hand loading stuff to see what they have to fit what gun .  :o  8)  ;)  ;D

Don't know if you "cast-yer-own", but cast bullet shooting opens an entire new field of fun with the 45-70.  There are many different bullets to choose from and most should easily make "hog soup" even at lower velocity (read milder recoil).  Congrats on some good shooting!  :D

Yeah, i am already planning a trip to the gun store this week, i need a few things, lol ..
my two local gun shops carry a "get you started" selection, but i think i need to expand  ;D

i dont cast my own, i think that'd be fun though.. something else to learn and work with.. well now that you mention it, .......

i have a strong draw to the buckskinner  era. i dunno why.  fur trapper/grizzly adams type stuff just makes sense to me.
my brother is a civil war cannon restorer and re-enactor,  its neat but not for me.
i picked up a vibrator tumbler today, and was looking real hard at the  melt pot and molds.. trying to figure out how to fit that stuff in the budget.
i need to get a kid out of the house, so i can take over her bedroom and make a reloading room...i wonder how a buckskinnners tent in the back yard would go over with the wife.. i could end up living out there, lol
