I realized the habit of tweaking the GPS while walking had risk and I thought I would share my bad habits with you. Hopefully your learning curve is faster then mine. This morning I decided to get some exercise and save a little bit of gas. I needed to walk about a mile then a mile backs to my start point. I had a waypoint at my destination that I was navigating to. According to the trip computer I was doing three miles an hour walking along the rough next to the pavement. The problem came about because I was focused on the GPS and not where I was putting my feet. Suddenly I found myself falling forward out of control, and the 76Cx coming back and swatting me in the face. I caught myself and chewed up my right hand a little, but no rear damage. The 76Cx did not suffer any damage.
Clearly I had a foolish, avoidable accident. My GPS buddy recently took a fall in the home. As a result he has had major surgery on his arm and will be in a cast for at least two months. If that happen to me I would lose the income from my summer job, most likely screw-up next deer season, and have other repercussions. Like my buddy most likely I would have to have somebody drive me around, so my actions would inconvenience others.
This evening my buddy was telling me about them taking the staples out of his arm today. That is something I would like to avoid.
I have thought about this happening before and issued myself some self-warnings. The key is that when playing with the GPS I need to stop. I felt rather foolish picking myself up off the roadside and dusting myself off.
The big issue now days is cellphone use while driving, but I recently read that Australia was looking at outlawing the use of cellphones, PDA’s, GPS, and other toys while driving because the are a distraction. I am aware that distracted drivers have caused fatal accidents on the local two-lane highway, but I do not want to read my headline, Old Man Swallows GPS after falling!
