Just looked up BRZ...cant seem to find it closest I came was  bnz =Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, Steyr, Austria

Others that started with "br"

br =Mathias Baeuerle, Laufwerke GmbH, St. Georgen, Black Forest
brb =Richard Rinker GmbH, Iserlohn
brd =HAGENUK-Hanseatische Apparaetebau-Gesellschaft Neufeldt u. Kuhnke GmbH, Kiel
brg =H.W. Schmidt, Doebeln in Sachsen

The 44 is 1944 manufacture date...that I am sure of

Sorry cant be more help

M1, M1A, 03A3, SMLE, No4 Mk1, No5 Mk1, Geweher M 1898, 98k (2), M44, Type 99, SKS, FNC, SAR-48, CAR-15 and civilian stuff too.

Also, am not sure, but I do think you are right about the 44 being a year of manufacture.

I'm thinking the BRZ might be the BRUNO action.  If so, you have something good to work with.

Are the letters upper case or lower? I am wondering if the n might not be fully formed in the stamp and looks like an r...just a wild thought...  ;D

Oops, I erred in that last post.
Not BRUNO, should have been BRNO, which is in Czechoslovakia - and they did manufacture BRNO actions.
I found where BRZ is used as an abbreviation for BRENZ which is a town in West Germany. Didn't see where they had an Arsenal or not.

Hope I haven't misled you.

Let's try this again.

On the K98 website, I found a directory of military markings.

This is what I found;    Steyr-Daimler-Puch A.G., Steyr (bnz) : (K98k : 1942, 43, 44)

which would indicate that your brz is a bnz which makes your rifle a Mauser K98k built by Steyr in 1944.

Calling all comments.

I have a Persian Carbine, so this mauser stuff is very interesting to me, and I still have much to learn about the various markings.

Thanks Guys, The letters are all upper case.  Before I obtained this action, somebody drilled and tapped it. They messed up on the holes in the rear bridge, so at the present time its at a gunsmiths waiting for him to fill the rear holes so I can re-tap them.  Again thanks to all of you. Al
