7mm Ammo for a Prohunter?
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:24:46 PM »
I've been working a ton of OT & now I'm treating myself, always wanted a Encore & I ordered one, it should be here by Wednesday, I'm topping it with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 BDC.......

What's a good factory round for the 7mm Pro Hunter? I'd like it to be around 140 grains. I'd like to find something that shoots good in it without going through 5-6 different kinds looking for the perfect round.

Mainly using it for coyotes 200-400 yards... yea, it's a little over kill but when I hit them I want them to go down.

If I don't hear something that changes my mind I think I'll go with Hornady Custom Rifle Ammo in 139 grain.
Not sure of the difference between the CUSTOM AMMO 7MM REM 139GR BTSP & the CUSTOM AMMO 7MM REM MAG 139GR IB.

Is the IB worth $5 more a box?

I'm a first time poster but while I was waiting to be activated I browsed through some of the Prohunter topics & saw the price check on them. I gave $711 shipping, taxes and all for my black SS.

Thanks!

Every barrel is a rule unto itself, so what may shoot well in mine may do poorly in yours. You simply have to experiment. If you have a friend/relative shooting the same caliber, try and see if you can get a few rounds to try out before buying an entire box.

The IB stands for Interbond, a premium projectile designed for deep penetration, so it's hardly necessary on a coyote. The BTSP is a standard cup-and-cure bullet with a boat-tail and the Interlock feature.

Thanks for the input, but I was really hoping for what had worked well for others.

Well, if 5 folks respond, chances are each one will mention a different brand and load. I don't shoot factory centerfire ammo but have handled a number of guns for folks who do.

Looking back into my files, I have sighted in 2 Encores in 7mm Remington Magnum over the last year. The first was provided with 2 boxes of ammo: Winchester 150 grain Ballistic Silvertips and Remington Express 140 grain PSP-CL. The Winchester ammo grouped into right at an inch (3 shots at 100 yards into 1.035") while the Remington was around 2.1".

The other barrel was sent with Hornady Custom with 154 grain Spire Points. The 3-shot group with that barrel was 0.992.

But again, what your barrel prefers may be entirely different.

Yea, your right, but thanks for the info just the same.

I went ahead & ordered the Hornady Custom .... hopefully it'll be here by this weekend. The gun is due to arrive Wednesday but I won't have a day off until Sunday, until then then I will love it & hug it & call it George (Bugs Bunny cartoon reference for those old enough to remember)
;-)

Thanks,
SH

The Fed. Fusion has shot great in every gun that I have tried it in. Including 25-06,280, 7mm, 30-06, 300wsm, and well that may be it. Just as a footnote the 25-06 and 280 are prohunter barrels. Both sub 1.5'' at 300 yrds.

I thought about the Fusion & if the Hornadys don't work out that may be what I try next.

Thanks
