What was your most memorable catch on the trapline
« on: February 26, 2008, 03:56:38 PM »
Mine was my first coyote. It was an old female.I caught her in some real rough country in the Missouri Breaks in Montana a long time ago. There was a real deep dry creek bed with what we call a "go down" across it.It's a deep cut in trail the crosses the dry creek bed.On the north side of this go down was a little shelf.I put in a dirthole set, lured with my lure"Pales & Silkies".Bedded a #2 Montgomery coil back about 8" pan center and brushed out my tracks.First check there she was,a nice front foot pad catch. After that first coyote my confidence went way up.My set mechanics, cleanliness and location choice got lots better."Man I was rolling".I smile when I look back on those old days.I made catching coyotes so hard.I was so confused with all sorts of theories. After awhile it got real simple to go in to an area and catch coyotes.Famous quote from one of the best coyote trappers of our time"There just coyotes, all they know is what we teach them".
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

First catches of all species are what I remember--double on first muskrats, beaver in the first trap I ever set for one--on the first night.First mink-stood there looking and looking trying to figure out what type of creature that was under the first ice of the year.Even my first coyote was exiting.

The first time I out witted that raccoon that would flip my traps over.  He would dig up the chain and pull the trap out, flip it over, and eat the bait.  He did that for three days in a row.  The fourth day he dug down to where the chain was supposed to be and found the extra well placed Bridger 1.65!!

I win!!!!

first mink was a big one for me, along with my second mink was a good one too. Taught me that both blind and baited sets work well, something valuable to know.

kurt, i have never heard of using #220 for fox. Could you please elaborate on sets using them, also did these kill the foxes quickly and efficiently or did they still require a dispatch? Just curiouse is all. This is one of those "why didnt i think of that" instances.
