Red Dot powder and the 44 Magnum

I have recently loaded several 240 cast bullets with the recommended starting load per the Alliant manual. I have not chronographed it but the recoil seems mid range in my 29. My brother has fired many of these rounds in his 1894 and says the are accurate and mild. Red Dot is always available at the local hardware store in 8 pound jugs for 110 bucks, very convenient. Any down side to Red Dot? I realized it is designed as a shot gun powder. The recommended start is 7.7 grains.

It works well in my .357. I load a 6.0 charge with a 158 jacketed  semi wad cutter. Recoil is mild and load is accurate. :)

I use Red Dot in my 44 mag also, I've seen no down side to this powder as of yet. I've only shot about 2k rounds threw my pistol with my 240gr cast bullets with red dot with good accuracy and easy clean up.

The red dot will work well , you will finds that just about all of the good handgun powders were designed to be used in shotguns first .

I have never shot RedDot in anything but have a friend that shot some in 357Mag years ago and got one his buddy had loaded with a double charge and the report was loud and recoil was extreme.  It didn't blow his Ruger Blackhawk up but it never shot as accurately after that.  Be careful about watching powder level with a low density load/powder such as this.

Over confidence leads to carelessness, carelessness leads to damage.  That buddy was overconfident.   

Instead of assuming I have done everything correct I always assume I make a mistake and check everything before moving to the next step, especially when charging pistol cases.  In some 45+ plus years I've never harmed me or a weapon or anyone else.  But I still recheck.

Red Dot may be a good choice for light loads in 44 magnum. Slower burning powders are better for magnum loads.
