Slinging a Contender Rifle Question

What is the best way to mount a sling on a Contender forearm?
I have a older Contender rifle with only one forearm screw. I want to put a sling on it so I bought a T/C sling kit. It has two screws that replace the forearm screws on the regular two screw Contender rifles. The screws are way to short for my forearm so they won't work and if I use a wood screw sling attachment like the one that goes on the buttstock I wonder if the forearm with only one screw will hold it. What will work?

Lack of support for the forend is just one of the reasons TC went to 2 screw mounts for them.

You might consider a barrel clamp forward sling stud.   Uncle Mikes used to offer them for TC barrels - maybe others as well.

My G2 forearm screw pulled out. I was lucky I caught my gun with no damage to my gun or scope.  I put the screw back in coated it heavy with JB Weld. I believe it is in permanent now.Just as preventive measure I am going to pull out he butt stock screw and do the same.  This had also happened to my Winchester Model 70 300 SAM. Good luck

Uncle Mike's makes a barrel band that will work on the S-14 barrels, but that is all I've ever been able to find. The 10" Bull, S-16, and 21" carbine are all the same size and taper and I've never found any sort of band to fit them.  Most of the synthetic forends that I have came with a sling stud.  I too have been "uneasy" about the one screw carbine barrels.  Never had one fail, but it just doesn't look substantial.  Uncle Mike does make a screw/stud that can replace a forend screw.  I don't remember trying it on a carbine forend. I know I have on the 14" barrels.  Screw length would be the issue.

fox ridge outfitters carries a barrel band that fits the tapered barrels.

I am having trouble finding a barrel band to fit my barrel. It is .47 to .48 thick. (Corrected 2/25/2008 to .68) I checked fox river and got a message stating they don't have a web sight up now.

I use barrel bands exclusively on my rifles, as I have an older 7mm TCU 21" barrel that the dovetail block pulled out because someone had mounted a sling to the forend.  I also have it one my 21" 375 Win Barrel.

To me, that band size seems small without digging out the contender and measuring (though I could be wrong, I just measured mine with a caliper).  What barrel is this for?

They were both Uncle Mikes.  The Brownells Catalog is the best source, the website isn't as easy.  Page 296 of Catalog 60.

You have to be careful, some are one piece bands that go over the barrel or tube magazine, could be a problem with a soldered contender site.  These are intended for tube fed lever actions.  You need to avoid these, the website doesn't tell you this.  And there are no pictures for these either.  A decent gunshop should carry these also.

I looked up which one I used, it was 0.675 to 0.725 Barrel Band clamp.  Uncle Mikes 1596-2 (discontinued) or SGW-20 (Brownells shows out of stock).  Here is a pic of where this band is on my rifle:



Where the barrel band is is 0.685 .  A variety of people (Uncle Mikes, Grovtec, Blackhawk) still make a barrel band for 0.630 to 0.675 which would put the band about 1 to 2" further forward, not ideal in my mind, but possibly workable.  Also, some times you can fudge the diameters on those barrel bands a little.  Here are the Brownells numbers (one for 1" sling and one for 1.25" sling) for 0.640 to 0.675 Uncle Mikes:

Of course, since that 357 Maximum barrel is useless without a Barrel Band, I'll take it off your hands for $25 (just kidding).  Nice Barrel, I love the old 21" tapered carbine barrels.  The one above is 7mm TCU.

If you try the smaller band than what I used, let us know how it works out.

Maybe a local dealer has "right" band or you can find one at a gunshow.  I'm gonna start trying to find some in case I get another barrel.

My caliper is a cheap made in China one so i zeroed it and my new measurement is .68. You guy's are right about the size. I am glade I asked before I ordered a set. Thanks Hank
