ok, with the issue of leading, that happens because the lead melts and leaves residue in the barrel ?
or because the burning gun powder melts the bullet base and the end result is the same ?

Yep both will cause the problem , also improper or not enough bullet lube will do it too . the biggest one is from trying to push a cast bullet to fast with out a gas check to cover its butt so to speak .

what about when the bullet is to small AND too hard.? Say you size a linotype 45-70 bullet to .456 or .457", then push it 1200 fps or so. Would a gas check help or not?? The other problem MIGHT be a nearly pure lead bullet sized the same and pushed to 1900 fps.

Friction causes leading. Reduce friction you reduce leading. Ive never seen where bases melted what ive seen is flame cutting on the sides of bullets that are improperly sized. Gas check reduce flame cutting because they seal the base of the bullet to the bore better and also will scrape some of the lead allready in your barrel as they go out. Properly sizing your bullets not only reduces blowby but reduces friction too. If your bullet is not going through your barrel straight its going to rub harder on one side of the other and increase friction. Like was said lube is a big factor too. It serves two and possibly three purposes. It lubricates and it helps seal the bore from blowby and some including me think it actually seasons a bore filling minor imperfections and actually putting down a coating that lead doesnt like to stick to. Kind of an anti flux. thats why alot of people me included will rarely clean a cast bullet shooting barrel.
