223 OR 22-250
« on: January 07, 2009, 03:08:32 AM »
Looking at a savage model 12 low profile varmint 26 in barrel in 223 1:7 twist or a 22-250 1:9.
Will be shooting 600 yrd & less. What would be the best option for this. Can get hornady 75 gr amax & sierra 69 & 77 gr locally. Have not shot this distance before but joined a club with the opportunity to & I think I would like a 22 cal I load for 223 now but that is not a decisive factor. Also could go with a 308 but not sure I want the recoil & I have 3 other 308's but they are not bench guns. Help I am indecisive.
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

The 1:7 twist will shoot the heavyer bullets better, i had a buddy that shot compation with a ar-15 400,600 and a 1000 yards and he shot a 1:7 hart barrel, i think he shot 72gr bullets out to 600 yards and the  79gr or 80gr bullets at a grand but he had to load them manuel in his ar because they where to long for the clip

Some 1in9 twist rifles will stabilize a 75 grain A-max bullet. Or so I have been told by fellow HP service rifle shooters. I have an AR with 1in8 twist it will shoot 80 grain matchkings much better than I can hold the rifle in feild positions.
Soon to get my mitts on Rem 700 with match 1in8 .22-250 barrel. What it can do is all speculation right now. Most rifles shoot better than the guy holding them.

I have a Remington 22 250 vs, and it's a nice rifle.  However, I wish that I had purchased a 223, because of barrel life.  Realistically, a 22 250 loaded for speed will fry the barrel in short order.  Barrel life on a 223, though pushing bullets slower, is MUCH longer.

It's all in BDC.  Dial them in, and they both perform extremely well.

I have a 22-250 Savage BVSS. After 3500 rounds I changed bbls. Won a few 500 yard so called Ground Hog shoots with this gun!!! Put a take off bbl on. 10 shot's I get 5/8" group. Can't beat a Savage bbl. for accuracy unless you go custom!! I shoot 52 gr. Sierra HP match with almost any powder!! H-380 and IMR 4895 are my favorite tho!!
