« on: February 21, 2008, 11:53:09 AM »
Trying to find a good group.
Shot the same with the forend on as off.
5 shot group of 100gr Hornady BT was 1" but 2 fliers about 2 o'clock, 8 inches away.

What loads work the best for you?
What COL  2.700" ?

SCP

2 loads that work very well in my 243 SL are the 100 grain Speer BTSP over 33 gr. of IMR4895 and the 58 grain V-max over 41 gr. of Varget . Both with CCI standard large rifle primers .

Thanks!  I've got the V-Max bullets.

"243 SL" confuses me however...

Absolutely splendid load in nearly all .243s is:

   Winchester or Remington case
   Winchester or CCI primer
   Hornady 87gr. BTHP
   42.5 gr. of IMR 4350
seat the bullet so it is just barely, barely touching the rifling
Try 42grs. first and look for any pressure signs. If there are none, try the 42.5 gr. load
There shouldn't be any pressure problems with either of those two cases.

Many, many, many times I've shot this load into 3/4" or less at 100yds. out of at least a couple dozen different rifles. And I've dropped a trainload of deer and hogs with it in their tracks. Have seen other shooters do the same.

   Enjoy !

Youth Handi Rifle (HB), 243 Win.
85gr Sierra BTHP
38gr H-4895
R-P cases
WLR Primers
COL: 2.662"
sub MOA at 100 yards

This is a max charge in Hodgdon's manual so please work up.  I could not get 100gr Remington PSPCLs to shoot worth a hoot in this rifle and I tried four different powders.
It worked just fine on my buddy's son's first deer.  65 yard bang-flop.
