Thoughts on why chokes work
« on: February 12, 2010, 11:48:29 AM »
Just some thinking while waiting for the snow to clear and the trap ranges to open.

Chokes do work, that is a given.  But how???

Being at the end of the barrel I was thinking that as the shot passed through the choke, it would cause the shot package to elongate as well as reduce in dia for a very short distance outside of the barrel.  This would cut down on wind resistance of the trailing shot in the pattern while keeping the whole pattern together longer until enough widening of the pattern to allow each  pellet to have its own shock wave which then displaces each other.

If there were enough straight barrel after the choke constriction then it would become cylinder again with the shot slightly damaged from the constriction an a worse pattern resulting.

Just some thoughts,   Anyone do any research on it?? Pictures??
