Contender Hammer
« on: March 02, 2008, 10:28:56 AM »
My son picked up a older contender a couple months ago and it has two features that I have never seen on other contenders. First off it has a 14 inch 30-30 barrel with auto ejector. second it has a leaver on top of hammer that you switch from left to right for rim or center fire. Have seen lots of contenders at gun shows but never one that has these two features. anyone know any thing about these?

Though I've never handled a 30-30 barrel, I have not seen an auto ejector on a T/C barrel.  Maybe they were put on "hunting" calibers for quicker reloading.

As I understand, the top swiitch was on the later pre-G2 model.  I have 2 pre-G2 actions, both bought since 2000, and both are top switch.  There is a lot to know about changes that were made through the years.

I believe the "ejectors" were an option you could get a Fox Ridge. The lever on top of the hammer to make the CF to RF change was standard on the latest models of original and G2 Contenders. Previous Contenders had a step face screw on the hammer face that you turn to make that change, others had a push block from side to side and even before all that there were no provisions to change them.
