beavertail safety

I installed a beavertail safety in my 1911. It fits pretty good if I do say so myself, except for the tab that sticks out to block the trigger. I know if it is in the way when the safety is depressed you need to file away a little metal until it works properly. I have the opposite problem, it clears the trigger depressed or not. I am no gunsmith and wanted to try souping up a 1911 to see how it went. I thought I was moving along pretty good until this.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've never had a safety from the factory that was that far out of spec. It is of course unsafe and will have to be fixed or replaced. I have welded the ends up but wonder what the problem was? The grip safety should have to be depressed for the trigger to be depressed enough to allow the hammer hooks to release.. Was the trigger bought new? the safety..

They are both new from wilson. It isn't the trigger as I put the original trigger back in and had the same problem. The gun is still disassembled and I am just fitting parts. The safety fits correctly, I didn't move the pivot point or anything. It is only a 64th out maybe. I can't get anything in there to measure exactly how far off it is. I sent an e-mail to wilson and hopefully they can help. Is there a way to bend it straight down and refile the profile? It is stainless steel also.

Jim,I am having a bit of trouble understanding your problem. Please correct me if I am wrong. The grip safety has a tab on the right side that blocks the back of the trigger stirrup. When you depress the grip safety it raises that tab out of the way of the trigger stirrup. If I understand you, it does not block the trigger no matter what position it is in. Does the tab look like the one on the STI sight that shows the 1911 operation?

Yes, It is a wilson "drop-in" part. Wilson told me that amt's tolerances aren't that great. I guess it may need some tinkering to get it to work. When I put the original safety and the new one on a punch side by side the difference is minimal but just enough to make it not work. I have a friend that will weld a small blob on the end of the tab so I can reshape it.
