Early muzzleloader????
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:21:19 AM »
Just read there's a chance NEXT Year for a chance to tag a doe  before the circus starts on the downstate saturday shotgun/rifle season opener.  Up until now the archery hunters  have been sucessful in preventing it.  It looks like NYS may be able to pull this off if they give the archery hunters some extra time for their season.  The reason for this is not enough deer are being harvested.  I even read that crossbows may be in our future.  I have been hoping for this for the last 10 years.  It's gotten to the point that I no longer want to hunt in my own neighborhood when the regular firearm season opens.

Hey, where did you read that?  Why not try the early muzzleloader season in the northern zone?  This year it is October 17 to the 23rd.  Plenty of public land up there.

I live in the northern part of the northern Zone. In fact when I look out my back door, I see Canada.  I always take the week of early muzzleloading off and hunt public as well as private land. You guys are welcome to come up hang out and go out and chase whitetails with smokepoles.

I was up your way Sunday Bubba.  I pushed "Home" on my GPS from Ogdensburg and it took me through some beautiful farmland dotted with laundry on the cloathes line & horse pucky on the road until I got to Harrisville.  Most of my hunting in Northern NY these days is around Tupper Lake & Mountain View.  I love this area where "Hunting" is still hunting.

Hey Bubba,
I take the week of early muzzleloader off, too.  It's a great time of year to not work!  Where do you hunt?  I see you are up around Ogdensburg.  How is the hunting up there?  Is there much state land to hunt?  I haven't been up there, but I did hunt a little up your way just north of Gouverneur on some state land years ago.  I think the area was called Beaver River??? I will check it out.  I haven't seen much sign or seen many deer down here around Parish so far this year.  I think the heavy snow was pretty hard on the herd here.  We get that lake effect snow real good here!

there is beaver creek and fish creek.  There is tons of state land. Fish creek site is I think 18 thou acres. My buddies and I also own an 800 acre farm we hunt which borders the state land.  So far this summer I am seeing tons of deer to include a lot of fawns.  I think it eill be a good season.

Traditions pursuit LT nickle plated fluted barrel with black composite thumbhole stock and my sons is a traditions lightning inline bolt nickle plated barrel with camo monte carlo stock. It's kind of a bummer that its on the wrong side of Rt 26 for the early bear season cause we see plenty of sign and have spotted a few over the years.

Traditions makes a great muzzlerloader. That is like my land on one side of the highway is one dmu and the other side another with entirely different rules as far as early muzzle and what can be taken.  Of course it affects the Doe permits also.  W esit and watch the deer cross the highway from safety to the umm kill zone.

bubba:  is it true that in Ogdensburg there are more whitetail harvested by vehicle accident than by hunters (lololol)(actually, not funny)?????

I plan on spending a couple of days at the Basswoods Lodge and Hunting Preserve to hunt hogs, at the end of the month.  When I was there last it was called 'The Old Stone Fence' (not to be confused with the restaurant/motel) but has since been bought out by one of the partners and is not the Basswoods Lodge.

Do you think I have to worry about the Border Patrol checkin' me out while I'm there??????  Mikey.

Mikey last year there were 5,100 car deer accidents and 7,000 deer harvested during the season in St Lawrence county, which is a lot. I help with a youth pheasant hunt at basswood on the 9/26. I do a safety seminar and help with the birds.  Let me know when you get here, we can meet and say hi.  The 27th early bow starts here and you have 4 days with last years tags.  So if it is after that, bring a bow and we can smack a deer if you partake in such things. Another thing to remember is across the road from basswood is all state land which they release pehasants every year.  So I hunt the free ones lol.  The border patrol is quite prevelant here, but they seem to be bothering the drug runners out of the reservation more than most people. Stay off route 37 as they have road blocks all the time between morristown and massena.  I get caught in them for work a lot.

Yep no major complaints about the traditions. The thumbhole is a bit awkward to carry while still hunting. The 4 of us that go up regularly every year have all found our own honey holes. we've learned over the years that it's just so big and in some spots so thick that unless you have way more than 4 guys and our camp only sleeps 7 and that still isn't enough to try and put on drives.

I am considering joining a club in the adirondacks to have a nice camp in the woods to go to as compared to the farm house we have now.  I will keep looking. Not so much for a place to hunt but a place to escape.

bubba:  that's a incredible 'harvest' for just one county, whether by vehicle or firearm.  I will be at the Basswoods from 9/23-25 but will try and contact you when I get there.  Dave should have your telephone number and hopefully we can connect for coffee or lunch.  Mikey.

not in favor of early muzzloader in southern tier. I bow hunt & we already lost a week to shot gun sat opener. So bow season will only be 3 weeks, not fair at all.  Mike

I peraonally am not that avid of a bow hunter. I'd love to see an early ML season in the southern zone. They should set up bow season like the nortern zone and give us a chance to use up last years tags. I'd probly be more apt to bow hunt if I had the chance to take a velvet buck!

well we start here 9/27. I have hunted early bow for years and have not seen a velvet buck by then.

With all due respect:  Do you honestly think solitary muzzleloader hunters will interfere with your hunting or lessen your chances of success to any degree?  Don't you think all hunters should co-operate for the good of our sport?  If more deer need to be harvested for the good of the deer herd wouldn't it make sense to have an early B/P season?  I think this is a pure emotional reaction by the archery community but that's just my opinion.

Where I am they are going to hire sharpshooter to get rid of the deer, not enough hunters to thin out the herds. They will not open land to any hunters due to the tree hugers.

We hunters pay almost $100. for super sportsman license and then government pays sharpshooters to thin deer hered.  THAT IS WHAT'S UNFAIR!  I also think it unfair to give exclusive season for any group of hunters when they aren't getting the job done.  Early B/P season could go a long way in protecting the deer herd from winter starvation & roadkills.

My guess has to do with threat of early & harsh winters in Adirondacks.  Deer need a chance to get to their winter yards.  I also think deer are under harvested in northern tier and their needs to be a longer season.
