Which lever gunn will you be using this season?
« on: June 20, 2003, 03:44:05 PM »
Of course I'm sure seasons are different for everyone here depending on where you live,  but say for you deer huuntesr what will you be taking to the woods this coming season? How about other game and lever guuns?   For me the upcoming whitetail season, the Marlin 1894  .44mag will get the nod most often.  Have a little 2.5X shotgun scope on her and she shoots really fine.  If I make the Colorado trip, then the .444P will be going for sure.

Will be taking my new Winne 94 444 to Colorado.  Just got it a few weeks back. Trying to find a good load for Elk.  My boy and I are going after the Tx slam.   He has a 44 mag Ruger and he is the one after the slam.  I will tag along and pick up what looks good to me. Hogs are always on are list.

Sounds like from your location  you are just down the road from me.  I live between  Old Town Spring  and Carter's Country.  I have a friend up in Dolores Co.  Been trying to go every year for a while now.  It is a low key set up, no guides, San Jaun National Forest, just walk and stalk.  Have been using a bolt gun, but it seems like we get in some pretty heavy cover, so th 94 will be going also.

Took my Dad's old Marlin 336 in 35 Rem, gave the wood a going over with Pro Custom oil, Touched up the blue with Brownell's Oxo-Blue. Topped it off with a new X/O Scout Mount and Leupold Scout Scope.  Should be a fast swinging freezer filler!

This year, as in previous years, I'm taking my Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage over to my hunting buddy's cozy cabin situated on the High Plateau among the mountain laurel in the Moshannon State Forest in north/central Pennsylvania... northeast of DuBois and northwest of Clearfield, PA.

My Model 99 is a late "EG" model and this year is it's golden anniversary... it was made in 1953, but still looks almost new.  It is "THE" classic eastern whitetail deer rifle/cartridge combination in the opinion of many experts.

As in previous years, I'll be using my own handloaded ammo... a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet in front of a maximum load of IMR4895 rifle powder sparked by a Winchester standard large rifle primer in Winchester cartridge cases that yields an average muzzle velocity of 2675 fps.

Right now it's a toss up between the Winchester M-94 in .375 Winchester and the M-94 in .356 Winchester.  The .356 struck out last season so I'd like to give it another chance.  However, I've been dying to get the .375 in the field.

Probably just take both and enjoy them :?

:-D It'll be an 1886 Winchester in whatever caliber I choose to use on a given day. The 40-82 and 45-90 will get a lot of attention this season 'cause they weren't hunted much last year.
I get my kicks from an 1886.

I'll take my 444P out for elk this year. I might even use it for doves in my pasture with some homemade shotshells just for fun.

I'll be taking my Marlin 1895G in 450 Marlin to South-Africa in September. It won't be my primary rifle (a Pre-64 358 Norma Mag will be). But I love my lever gun and I have put so much time and money into making it look pretty it would be a shame not to take it.

The 450 in Africa! Go Nitro!
« Reply #9 on: June 22, 2003, 06:03:24 PM »
Actually, you may end up using it a lot, especially when 'still hunting' thin skinned beasties in the jesse or adrenaline grass.

Good cat medicine, too - way above the 2150 fps needed for hydrostatic 'sedation' of an angry kitty.

Nope, never been, but I'm planning.  Check out www.african-hunter.com.  This month's paper version 'Lechwe issue' has an article by Vince Lupo, who used a Marlin lever with Garrett 47-70's.

I'd really like to hear about your trip, and how the levergun was used.

Cheers!

470 NitroExpress:  Wow, that is one pretty rifle.  I'll be taking one of three, or maybe all three, Winchester Big Bores in 444.  My favorite lever caliber.  Mikey.

For elk, I will be taking my Browning 71s in both .348 and 450 Alaskan.  I'll alternate them for fun.  Not sure what for deer, but maybe the Ruger No. 1 in .257 Rob'ts.

I used my M375 Marlin alot last season.  Will definitely use it again this season.  I also used a .35 Rem 336A to take a doe.  Picked up a real sweet shooting little Marlin 30-30; need to try it.  Also finallly got my BLR'81 scoped and ready to go.  May have a Savage "1895 Commemorative" in .308 ready as well.  I'm shipping the lever off to be color casehardened now.

What gun to hunt with this season
« Reply #16 on: June 24, 2003, 03:56:51 PM »
I have a Rossi .44-40 that is my carry gun when I am just loafing.  I have worked up some loads with Remington softpoints and 2400 that I would like to try out.  In addition, I have a model 94 Chief Crazy Horse commemorative that I got already fired, and I want to try that out after I bag something with the .44-40.

what does that Chief Crazy Horse commorative look like?  Does it have some engraving on the receiver like some others I've seen?  How about the wood?  Buster, sounds like you have your work cut out for you just deciding which gun to take out which day of the week.  Hope you bag one with each gun this season.  Wouldn't that be fun?

Depends on what day of the week it is.
On Mon its a 336C 30-30.
On Tues its a 1894CP .357
On Wed its a 1894 44mag
On Thus its a 336T 30-30
On Fri is a 30AS in 307 winchester
On Sat its a Marlin 375
On Sun its a 336C 35 rem.
Now all I need is 7 more so I can break them down into morning
and evening guns.

Winchester Mod. 88 in .308.  I have a new stock from Boyd's Gunstocks to put on (laminated!), though that may become a winter project.  I have a canoe to build first.
